Mark 1:14-34 We would See Jesus

Preaching / Calling / Teaching / Casting / Healing

1st Preaching -  Proclamation -  Declaring truth

Mark 1:14-15

Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."

#1 The Kingdom is at hand

#2 Repent

Timeless MESSAGE – The kingdom of God is at Hand -  Last days

Things would get worse not Better – Increase in Crime / Drug abuse / Rape / Fraud

Last days the Love of many would grow cold

KENYA – SEWAGE SWAMP – Amazing People lived by there worked by there

Club by there – How obvious – Grown immune to it

Many are sick because of it

REPENTENCE IS SO IMPORTANT – Not cater to sin – Turn from it – turn to the Lord

So first we see Jesus Preaching:

2nd Calling: V. 16-20

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.17 Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."18 They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

19 When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.20 And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.

Call to follow Him -  Follower of Christ

Call to be Fishers of Men – Catching Souls

Now it doesn’t surprise me that Jesus would call a couple of Fishermen to be his Disciples / Workers

Ministry & Fishing are Similar : Rise early / much patience – Fishing equipment is Delicate – hooks

Also Note : Peter & Andrew: Casting : Andrew was always bringing people to Jesus / Peter / Lad

Peter became an Evangelist

James & John: Mending / They had a Mending Ministry – more Pastoral care

God at times calls us according to our tendencies

A) What do you Gravitate towards

B) Ben Garate – Exhorter – Personality –

C) Rick Coburn – Grandpa – Softness –

D) So whatever your temperament or Personality is watch the Lord use that in his ministry:

1) BE YOU !!!!!!!!!

Note a Key word in V. 18 IMMEDIATELY

KJV = Straightway: without hesitation

A) Best way to follow the Lord – Don’t hesitate

B) Hesitation gives opportunity to talk yourself out of doing whatever God is calling you to do

1) Rationalize why it won’t work

C) Hesitation gives opportunity for the Devil to discourage:

1) Listen when God speaks – Respond Immediately

D) Breaking up with a girlfriend – Put it off

1) Don’t do it { Respond Straightway – Immediately without Hesitation

So we see Jesus Preaching / See Him Calling –

NEXT – We see Him TEACHING V.21-22

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Synagogue is not the TEMPLE :

A) Temple was for Sacrifice : Synagogue in many towns – all it required was ten Jewish men

B) Places of worship & study – not run by the Priest but by Layman -

C) When a rabbi would come into the area the head of the synagogue would invite him to come speak for the day – Jesus is doing that here

Ministry Minded: Preaching & Teaching

A) Preaching Proclamation – Exhort – Preaching for  a Decision –

B) Teaching: Instruction – Conversational

C) Friend great Preacher- small gathering – 50 people  -

D) Picture the audience like your wife at the dinner table – talk to them

E) Pastor Chuck – came from a Church of Preachers

1) This is Jesus

A) Still strong – Authority was in the Scriptures

B) Not like the Scribes – Scribes problem was they were hypocrites – walk didn’t match talk

1) My Son – don’t smoke -  I smoke

C) People saw in Jesus a lifestyle that matched his teaching –

1) When he talked about God the people knew that they were listening to someone who Knew God

D) Another place: tells us the people were drawn to Him -

S0 Preaching / Calling / teaching / # 4 CASTING

23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,24 saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are -- the Holy one of God!"

25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying,  "Be quiet, and come out of him!"26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."28 And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

This passage teaches us a very important truth:

Jesus and Demons cannot coexist in the same place

Christians cannot be demon possessed !

1 John 1:5  God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

Spiritual Battle – Be strong in the Lord

A) Jesus has authority over the enemy

B) Means the enemy doesn’t need to have authority over in your life

C) In the same way that this man was set free – we are free in the Lord

1) Walk in that Freedom –Walk in that Victory

D) Some people give the Devil way too much Credit

E) Others take him totally for granted – Me Oregon

Key is a Balance – Realize that in Jesus we have authority over the forces of the enemy.

A) As soon as I prayed – oppression left

So we see Jesus Preaching / Calling / Teaching / Casting / Finally HEALING V. 29-34

Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

A) Note Simon & Andrew are doing a really good thing here – they leave Church & take Jesus home with them

B) Can I encourage you in that – Leave here – take Jesus Home with You !!!!

1) Not just a Church thing – LIFE THING

30 But Simon's wife's mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once.31 So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them.

C) Simon’s Mother in law gets touched by Jesus – she was really sick – now well

1) What his her response – to Serve them

D) Always tell when someone has been genuinely touched by Jesus – { Serve / worship

Note the result of Bringing Jesus Home v.32

At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed.33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door.34 Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.

May the Presence of Jesus be so apparent in our homes that those who are hurting want to be there

A) Growing up – Friends came to my house

B) Didn’t like it at their house –

C) May this house be a place where the hurting can come and get healed

D) Jesus is in the Business of touching those who are hurting –

Healing – Physically / Emotionally / Spiritually

Most important – Change your life

The Kingdom of God is at Hand

Starting place – REPENT !!!
