John 14:1-26  (Show us the Father)

Intro: Set the scene – Ch.13

A)Final Words / Deeds / Prayer

"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.  2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

Mansions = Dwelling Places – Pastor and Bus driver

He droved pp prayed / You  taught pp slept

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.  4 And where I go you know, and the way you know."

5 Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?"

6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Now I want you to note something here – He doesn’t say: No man comes to God ……me

A)He uses the term Father – Much different much more personal

B) One difference of the NT from OT / NC vs OC

1) OC – Distance – God was Omnious

C) Remember at Sinai – Mt quaked lighting thunder smoke –

1) People said to Moses – You talk to Him – tell us what He says –

God appeared to Abe – El Shadai the Almighty

A)Moses as the I AM – Yahweh – Didn’t really know how to pronounce – YHWH

B) Over the yrs –

1) Jehovah Jireh:The Lord our  Provider

2) Jehovah Nissi: The Lord our Banner

3) Jehovah Shalom: ……Peace

4) Jehovah Ra ……….. Shepherd

5) Jehovah Rapha ….. Our healer

6) Jehovah sikenu - … Our righteous

7) Jehovah Shama …. The Lord ever present

C) All through the OT God was revealing himself in his name

1) He reveals himself according to the needs of man

But it was never Father – Only once does the Lord say in Reference to Solomon : I will be His Father and he shall be my son

A)David a man after God’s own heart – the great Psalmist – 150 Psalms only once Psalm 89

B) Those are the only two times in the OT until you come to Isaiah – where He uses the term a couple of times but in reference to { Father of the nation

C) Not once do you hear one of the Patriarchs or Prophets – Crying out to God – My Father

But then we come to the NT – Jesus says when you pray: Our Father ……

A)You talk to Him -  Personal

B) One of the problems with Catholism

1) Too many mediators – Saints Mary Priest

C) One Mediator Jesus – You come address as Father

D) He wants to talk to You – intimate with you

1) Not just at Bible study from me – Your heart

E) Pray: Our Father

1)Fathers house / Gal 4;6 Spirit crying Abba – Daddy

V.7 "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him."

Here He throws a zinger at them – you can imagine the disciples looking at Thomas – an hoping he will ask for clarification again – This time it’s Philip

8 Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us."

Show is the Father and we will be satisfied

9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?

These words must have pierced Philip’s Heart

Philip mean to say you don’t know me ? So Jesus clarifies – so glad he did

He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

We want to know God – the Father – Jesus says look at me!

A)Heart for those broken / healed / fixed / widows

B) The Heart of the Father is manifested in the Son

Hebrews 1:1-2

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son,

V.3 Brightness of Glory express image of His person

10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.  11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

A)The Greek construction of the question in John 14:10 indicates that the Lord expected a yes answer from Philip:

B)he did believe that Jesus was in the Father and the Father in Him.

1) That being the case, Philip should have realized that the words of Jesus, as well as His works, came from the Father and revealed the Father.

C) Jesus revealed the Father in: what He said (7:16 "My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.”)

What He did (5:19 “for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.”) during His earthly ministry.

Four hundred years before Christ was born, the Greek philosopher Plato wrote, "To find out the Father and Maker of all this universe is a hard task, and when we have found Him, to speak of Him to all men is impossible."

But Plato was wrong! We can know the Father and Maker of the universe, for Jesus Christ revealed Him to us.

A)Why should our hearts be troubled when the Creator & Governor of the universe is our own Father?

"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

A)Greater works than Jesus – that seems impossible

What does this mean

B) Book of Acts – healings / dead raised but nothing to the degree of Jesus

1) Not greater in Sensation or Magnitude

C) Greater in Scope : Jesus limited his ministry to Israel – and a few close surrounding areas

1) Jesus physical body – He was limited one place at a time

D) Now – Thru his body all over the World

1) Billy Graham Preaches – Technology 1 billion pp

D) Missionaries – All over the World

1) Computer Tech right here in Vista

His spirit in the heart of Millions

13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

A)What is this about – is this a sort of Credit card from Heaven

B) Some one suggest that – Name it claim Blab it grab it -  Lexus SUV – In Jesus Name

1) Fred Price – Lexus Faith or VW faith

C) What is Jesus saying ? Best comm. Is Bible

John 15:7

7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

A)Abiding in His word – You have His heart

Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself also in the LORD,

And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

B) His Desires become yours as you delight

James 4:2-3

Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss , that you may spend it on your pleasures.

I know people who are souly – delighting in the things of this World

A)Talking to someone recently – God revealed she was an idolater – Took away her stuff

B) Asking in His name starts with delighting yourself in the Lord – His heart

Learn that  3 things here are necessary in our prayers:

[1] “in my name” - Not just tacking “in Jesus’ name” to the end of every prayer.

In Hebrew thought, the “name” expresses the essential character of the person named.

To pray “in Jesus’ name” is to make requests that are in fullest harmony with Christ’s character and His purposes.

[2] We are not able to perform them: it is Christ in us who “will do” them.

[3] Our purpose in prayer is for the Father to be glorified!

V.15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments.

A)Here Jesus reveals that obedience – holiness – are a matter of Love – not of Duty

B) If it is only duty that holds us to God’s commandments – Drudgery – Fail

1) But if Love is the motivating Factor – different story – much more consistent

C) But the Fact of the matter is – We still struggle

Which is why what Jesus says next is wonderful

1)    He introduces us the HS

D) In fact the most comprehensive teachings on the HS from the lips of Jesus come here in Jn 14-16

1) Look at in depth Sun am after New years

E) Briefly consider tonight

John 14:16-18

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever

Another = Another of the same Kind { Just like Jesus

Helper or comforter – Jesus is a helper and comforter

The word is Parakletos – One called alongside to Help – The nature of the Spirit of Jesus

He will – not it – HS is a person 3rd person trinity

A)Not a force – not electricity – He supplies power but He is not a power –

B) HS has personal Characteristics

1) He loves – force can’t love Electricity can’t …

2) He speaks

3) He has a mind

4) He teaches

5) A will

6) Be lied to

7) He can be grieved

C) When we interpret our theology that way – we are no longer active – We are passive

1) Not how much of the HS can you get – but how much of You does the HS have!

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever

A)Forever – not just until the canon of Scripture was finished

B) Take HS ought of some Churches today – and 90% of their activity would continue

1) Programs

C) Take the HS out of the early Church and 90% of their activity come to a screeching halt

1) They recognized in the same way they were dependent on Jesus when He was alive w/ them

D) Afterwards they were equally dependent upon His spirit living in their hearts

Now in V.17 He identifies the HS in an important way! The Spirit of Truth !

17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,

A)The world is not so much into truth these days

B) Jesus was full of grace & truth – He is the way the truth and the Life –

1) Makes sense that His Spirit – would be the Spirit of truth –

C) HS reveals truth – He convicts of truth !

1) What is right

D) Beauty of the Christian – HS is in our hearts

1) Jesus continues

The world does not receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

He was w/ them because Jesus was with them

A)In them John 20 Indwelt

B) HS in us – teaches truth / reveals word – guides us into all truth

1) When we step out of that line – Convicts – ALARM going off -  BED

18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

A)Not leave orphans – not left to our own devices

I will come to you – How? HS

V.19 "A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.  20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.

A)Joy those words had after the Resurrection –

ALIVE becomes he rose { I’ll rise .. He rose

B) Christ living in us ! – The Father being manifested to us

21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."

Now once again Jesus is equating love with Keeping the commandments

A)He is not suggesting here that we are under the law

Oswald Chambers: Christian perfection is not perfection of performance – but perfection of relationship.

B) As believers we seek to keep the commands of God – we hold them dear to us – embrace them

1) We believe that they are right standards for living

C) Contrast that with the World’s approach to God’s commandments – They want to cast them down

1) They seek to cast away all that is Holy / All that is righteous / everything that is good

2) Every standard of Morality

D) But you and I on the other hand embrace the Standards of God – we hold to the truth

1) Because we are indwelt with the spirit of truth

It is not that we fulfill everyone of them perfectly and consistently but we embrace them as the standard to live by

A)Example: Bible says – that a Husband is to love His wife as Christ …..

B) There is not a husband who has ever done that perfectly and consistently

1) In fact most of us – fail miserably more than we have success in that area

C) But that doesn’t lessen the standard – Listen the Bar is still high

D)This is one of the things that disturbs me in the Church today.

1) Because the Church is so concerned about people feeling good about themselves – Lower the bar

E) Make something less attainable the standard

1)Holiness get redefined

2) Marriage gets redefined

3) Ethics redefined

Listen the Lord set the Bar high to make us dependent on the HS

A)We embrace it because we love the Lord

B) Fail constantly as a Father / a Husband – a pastor

1) My wife loves me because she Knows I am still aiming at the Bar !

Wrap this up

22 Judas (not Iscariot) part of his name said to Him, "Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?"

A)They expected the Messiah to manifest himself to the World

23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.  24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me.

B) Jesus is basically suggesting that He is going to be manifested to the world in those who love Him

C) The Phrase in v.23 We will come to him and make Our home with him. Is interesting

1) Word Home once again is mansion

D) Jesus says of the Godhead – We are going to make our mansion – His life – our dwelling – His heart

1) Put that together w/ what Jesus says – He preparing a mansion for us

E) Great trade: - He gets these old tents – we get glory

25"These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.  26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

A)Takes us right back to the Key – HS

B) Teach and bring to remembrance – Study and trust

1 Corinthians 2:9-10

9 But as it is written:

"Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,

Nor have entered into the heart of man

The things which God has prepared for those who love Him."

10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
