John 14:16-17 (The Baptism of the Holy Spirit)

Today is our last study in this little series that we have been doing on the HS

A)First study we established the Fact that the HS was a Person{ 3rd Person of triune God.

B) Person – not a force / not an energy / not a power

1) Personal traits – Personal Characteristics and Personal actions ascribed to the HS

C) He supplies POWER but He is not A POWER!

Then we spent the next 2 weeks talking about the Ministry of the HS indwelling the believer.

1) Teach you – John 14:26

2) Bring to your remembrance John 14:26

3) Bring peace and Stability to you John 14:27

4) He will testify of me- John 15:26

5) He will bear witness – John 15:27

6) He will guide you into all truth- John 16:13

7) He will speak in the authority of Jesus John 16:13

8) He will glorify Jesus – John 16:14

9) He will take the things of Christ and reveal them to us. John 16:14,15

10) He is seeking to work in us and through us to convict the World of sin, righteousness, and of Judgment John 16:8-11

A)We might say that the ministry of the HS in the believer is primarily based dealing with our Sanctification

B) His working to teach us/ guide us / mold and shape us to MAKE US more like JESUS.

C) But there is one more aspect of the HS ministry in the life of a Christian that we have not talked about.

D) 3 relationships – John 14:16-17 gives us the first 2

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever  17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

With you { Drawing us to Christ / Once we receive Christ – He Indwells us! IN YOU!   When were they indwelt?               Turn to John 20:19-23

Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you."  20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."  22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

That is when they were indwelt with the HS – now residing in them.

A)Prior to that time no one was indwelt with the HS

B) Because the HS of God can only reside in a Pure Vessel –

1)Jesus death and Rez made the way for us to be made pure – Sins forgiven cleansed – New

C) Now we read in Matthew and Mark’s gospel – that the Lord gave them instructions for reaching the world

Matthew 28:18-20

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.”

Mark 16:15-18

“And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.  16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.  17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;  18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

D) That was their mission that was their mandate – but before they went out – ONE THING  was needed

1) 3rd aspect of the HS ministry in their lives

Turn to Acts 1:4-8

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;  5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."  6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 And He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.  8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

E) Whole new word being used here: He is going to come upon you –

Someone asked me a very good question a weak or so ago.

A)What was the difference in the HS relationship to the OT saints Vs the NT saints.

B) Good question: 2 Differences: The HS was with the OT believers – conviction of breaking the Law

1) He worked on their conscience

C) But He was not IN THEM! – That did not happen until after Jesus died on Cross & Rose again.

1) NEW COVENANT Ezekiel36:26-27

26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

D) So He was with them – not indwelling them

Now we do read of the HS coming UPON people in the OT at various times for empowering for certain circumstances and Service.

1) Numbers 11:25 The 70 elders – came upon them

     like He was upon Moses.

2) Numbers 24:2 Balaam – Prophesied.

3) Judges 3:10 Othniel Judged

4) Judges 6:34 Gideon

5) Judges 14:6 Samson

6) 1 Samuel 10:10 Saul – Prophesying

7) 1 Samuel 16:13 David.

A)But in each one of these situations it was more select – ONLY Certain SELECT people.

1) And only at certain times

B): David prayed take not Your HS from me.

1) He experienced that empowering and anointing at all times.

C) In the NT it is available for every believer- at any time!  THAT IS A BIG DIFFERNCE

So for the remainder of our time this morning – I want to consider the Baptism of the HS

1) What it is ?

2) What is the criteria for receiving it ?

3) What is the means of receiving it?

4) What are some of the evidences of it?

5) How often can it occur?

6) What can hinder a person from experiencing it?

A)Start with What is it? TERMINOLOGY { JF

1)    Look again at V. 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

B)He refers to it as the Baptism of the HS! This I think gives us a neat picture.

1) Think of water Baptism - Being immersed -  fully covered in the water.

C) Not you getting more of the HS – It is the HS getting more of you.

1) You have all the HS you will ever need when you are saved – He indwells your heart.

D) Question remains – How much of the HS is He going to get of you.

1) Example: Sail boat -

Example Go down to the ocean – put your feet in the water – You have all the ocean ever need right there

A)Walk out – Knee deep – still standing{ still in control.

B) Wade out over your head – suddenly the ocean is in control of you.

1) Swim against or go with the flow

C) The Baptism of the HS happens when a believer says – I want you to have all of me

1) I want you Lord to move me! – I want to go with the flow of your moving in my life

2)What is the criteria for receiving it ?

A)Note V. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

B) We need to understand what it is for: Power to be His Witnesses.  3 ideas here.

1)Ambassadors – Represent Christ !

C) So it is reserved first of all for the person who wants to make an impact for Jesus in this world.

D) But also included in this is the idea of being His SERVANTS

1) HS gives gifts to those who are Baptized for the purpose of building up the Body of Christ.

But there is one more thing involved in this word witness – We get our modern day word Martyr from

A)So the idea is this is for those who are so serious for Christ – They want to make a Stand

B) Not for those living one foot in the world / another in the heart.

C) So the basic Criteria could be summed up this way

1)It is for those who want to tell others about Christ

2)Those who want to be a blessing to other believers

3) Those who want to live 100% for the Lord in this world.

D) If anyone of those things are missing – it can be a deterrent from experiencing the Baptism of the HS

3) What is the means of receiving it?

A)Stand on your head – memorize 1000 verses –

Go on 10 mission trips  - No it is simple

B) Again notice V. 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father,

C) Note He calls this the Promise of the Father.

1) Promises of the NT are based on who we are in Christ – His performance not ours

D) 2 Corinthians 1:20 – All the promises of God are yes – Certain – amen – accomplished in Christ

In Luke’s Gospel Jesus gives a powerful analogy!

Luke 11:11-13 “If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?  12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

A)This is what is so exciting to me about receiving the Baptism of the HS – Just ask!

B) Knowing the Criteria – knowing what it is for

1) Witness / Build up / Stand strong – Lord I want that ! – SOLD OUT FOR YOU

C) Just ask – Your Father – who loves to give good gifts to HIS KIDS – He will give you the HS

D) Now sometimes we see in the book of Acts where people had hands laid on them & prayed for as part of the asking.

1) But not always – { Simple Ask me !

4) What are some of the evidences of it?

A)First thing that comes to mind – Boldness !

B) Apostles were transformed from these cowardly men who fled on the night of Christ arrest –

1) To a band of men – now united & bold in sharing Christ and willing to die for Him.

C) We see Peter in Acts 2 standing out in a crowd of at least 3,000 and boldly proclaiming –

1) You KILLED the MESSIAH

D) This is only after 40 days before – He is sitting around a fire – servant girls – denied 3 times

1) There was a transformation in His Character and boldness { Greg Laurie

In Acts 4:13 Peter and John boldness before the religious leaders

A)Acts 4:29 – IN the midst of great opposition they are praying not for it to stop but greater boldness to share!

B) Acts 7 A man named Stephen preaches with Boldness before the Sanhedrin - in the midst of being stoned to death

C) We see several in the Church moving in the miraculous – Peter Acts 3 / Stephen Acts 6 / Philip Acts 7 { Healings / casting out demons etc

D) Acts 5:1-10 Peter has discernment – that a couple is lying to the Lord.

E) One of the evidences – Scenes frequently in the book of Acts – speaking in tongues

1) Prayer language -  1 Corinthians 14 – Builds up the believer ! Not for the Church – w/out interpretation

2) Reserved for personal time. { Speak it

So those are some of the evidences seen in the Bible.

5) How often can it occur?

A)Acts 2 initial happening – The day of Pentecost

Acts 2:1-4

“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Acts 4:8 Peter has another Preaching opportunity

8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders of Israel:

Same group as in Acts 2  only it has grown now!

RD V. 23 -31

B) Here we see it happening again. – 2nd time

C) So it is obvious it happens more than once!

D) Paul in Ephesians 5:18 - 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.

E) Literally be continually being filled.

1) DL Moody – I leak !

I think that we should daily be praying Lord – fill me baptize me, empower me – whatever you want to call it  with you HS –

6) What can hinder it?

A)Top of the list is self reliance and self dependence

B) When we start thinking we have something to offer to God { Problem in the Church today

1) Too much reliance on programs – little on Prayer

C) Subtle attitude I don’t need his help

D) Matthew 5:3 Poor in Spirit !

But another thing that quenches the Spirit is sin !

In Ephesians Paul talks about not grieving the HS

A)List there in Ch. 4 the things that are grievous to him  Beg in v.25

B) Lying, Anger, stealing, corrupt speech, cutting talk – doesn’t edify

1) Bitterness, Malice, - evil speaking – or gossip

C) He isn’t going to empower that person.
