Heb 8:10-12 The HS in the Life of the Believer
New Covenant. Prt 4
Intro:
Today we are once again in Heb.8 discussing the subject of the New Covenant.
Camped out here important subject for the Believer in JC
A)Noted 3 Components New start v12 ( Justification declared righteous sins forgiven & forgotten )
B) NEW PART: V.10,11 - All shall Know me I will be their God

Intimacy / Family
C) NEW HEART : V.10a Internal work My law written on the tables of your heart
not stone

Companion passage Ezk
36:26,27
26I will give you a new heart and put a new
spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give
you a heart of flesh. Internal

27I will
put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will
keep My judgments and do them.
D) There in v.27 the
Lord describes two aspects of the HS ministry in the Life of the Believer / 1st Indwelling He is in us / My spirit w/ in you
1)
The 2nd is an Empowering & Enabling causing us to walk in Gods statues & Keep
His judgments & do them
Well
for the next 35 minutes today I am going to attempt the impossible & give
an overview of these two very important aspects of the HS ministry w/ in our
lives !!!! - Turn to John 14:15
A)The SCENE: Upper room on the night before the Crucifixion /
1)
He has just washed
their feet- taking the role of the servant / exhorted them to treat each other
the same /
B) Given them a New
Commandment Love each other as He has loved them ( He shares w/ them that
they are all going to forsake him that night)
1)
Peter is going to deny
Him ( Troubling stuff)
C)But then He says in ch.14:1 Dont be troubled He tells them that He has to go away to His fathers house
to prepare a place for them
1)
But He is going to
come again to receive them to Himself
D) By this time their
heads must be spinning but notice what Jesus says next v.16-20 ( pay
attention to the language)
Jesus
says I am not going to leave you as orphans but I am going to send the Helper
the spirit of truth
A)The World doesnt Know him but you do because He is w/ you
Why did they know Him ? How was He w/ them
B) The HS is the 3rd
person of the Trinity God the Father/ Son/ HS- 3 Separate persons but ALL ONE ( I dont understand)
1)
The HS was Christ
and He was in Christ since Christ was w/ them, The Spirit was w/ them
C) But then Jesus said
v.17 He shall be IN YOU this is that
Indwelling work of the HS that the New Cov Promised
1)
God bringing our
spirits to life & then placing his spirit to live in us /
He is
w/ You ( Unbelievers before Conversion Convict ) He Indwells
You the moment we are born again
A)So in this moment when their hearts would be troubled Jesus says I am sending the Helper or the Comforter
B)The Greek word
Helper is parakletos which literally means:
called to ones side or called to ones aid.
1)In Greek writings we
also find this word used in a court of justice to denote a counsel for the
defense/ An advocate..one who pleaded
anothers cause.
So
first thing we learn about the Ministry of the HS in our lives is He is there
to help us or Aid us, to Comfort us /
Be our Defense
Now
Jesus had been all of those things to his disciples / when the Pharisees &
Sadducees were always bring accusation against them
A)Jesus was their defense When
things were rough / He was there to comfort / in a Jam He was there to Aid
them
B) They lived together for 3 ½ yrs / They had been
friends / Which is something that we sometimes fail to realize about Jesus
& His Disciples
1)
We can have this sort
of Austere Perception of Jesus & His Disciples
( Monks ) Especially if you grew up in Church /
C) We fail to realize
that for 3 ½ yrs they hung out together ( Gospel RD)
We
dont picture them like that but they probably brushed bees out of Jesus
hair Long hair bees watch out Jesus
A)They probably took splinters out of each others fingers & feet / I bet they BURPED ( We dont think about stuff like that )
B) They spilled things
did Jesus ever knock over a cup? Did Peter ever
spill something on Jesus razed for the rest of the day by the others
C) Did they ever have to
tell Jesus he had a piece of Spinach stuck in his teeth ( Lord that was a good teaching but
.. in your teeth

Imagine all the meals
they spent together / all the conversations / the Joking
D) Imagine the hard time
they gave James & John after Jesus called them the SONS OF THUNDER And now here they come
..Thunder !!!!!
1)
They laughed together
/ they cried together they were comrades
They
had come to depend upon HIS personal presence W/ THEM
A)Their inner action w/ Him centered around their Physical senses
John put it this way 1jn 1:1
1That which was from the beginning, which
we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and
our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life ( Touch / saw / Heard )
B) But
Now He was going to inner act w/ them in a different capacity they would
develop a different censory organ
1) His Spirit w/ in them / The Spirit of Truth / I am the way..truth
C) We often think I
would have no trouble believing if I could just See him w/ my eyes / hear him
w/ my ears
D)Ever wonder how things
would be different in the home if Jesus Physically sat
at the dinner table every night
1)
kinder Conversation
No one would get called a dork
2) Not fighting over the last piece of Chicken / or last scoop of Ice cream
Much more gracious
E) How would your parenting Change
I can be so crabby sometimes / You just wait until
he goes to be you are really going to get it
1)
Lord you look like
you could use a nap
If He was
Physically w/ us in traffic ? What would that be like ?
A)Little boy Mom
why are there so many Idiots on the Road when dad drives
B) How many of you guys would
stop on the way home from work say Lord sit here
while I run in & get a cold one
1)
At the Beach -
Lord look at that Babe
C)
You who are single what if the
Lord was w/ you Physically on a date sitting in the back seat ( Or would
he need to sit in the front seat )

D)What if the Lord was w/ us & just slipped into the Back

That
is exactly what the Lord is saying to His disciples/send helper to them/ He is w/ us He is In us always in every
situation / struggle
A)But because we can be so dependent on our Physical senses / we Forget that / He is w/ in He is in us / We go / He goes
B)That is one of the most important things the Lord would have
us realize about our Relationship w/ Him
C) Same Jesus who walked
/ talked /ate / w/ the disciples day in and day out is w/ us Every moment of
every day!!
Quickly
consider some of the things the HS does in us to Helps us / Aids us &
comforts us v.26
A)Here we learn that the
HS is our teacher Spirit of truth
Opens the Scriptures to us
B) Things that we have
previously never understood suddenly make sense ( High School students no
concordance grab deep meaning)
Paul put it
this way in 1 Cor. 2:14 Contrast Natural man & the spiritual
12Now we have received, not the spirit of
the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that
have been freely given to us by God.
13These things we also speak, not in words
which mans wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing
spiritual things with spiritual. 14But the natural man does not
receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor
can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
we
now have the mind of Christ.
We
have the mind of Christ /We
are unlearning our dependency upon the physical senses and we are learning a
New Faculty called Discernment
A)Our entire lives we have spent learning the things we know thru those 5 senses of what we See/ Hear/ Touch/ Taste/ Smell
B)But the things of the
Spirit are communicated to us in a different way
1) When we read the Scriptures not just a
visual & Intellectual thing that is taking Place / but His Spirit actually
is inner acting w/ Our Spirits
C)His personality
actually penetrates our personality/ thru that His truth is actually embedded w/ in us / Communion between our
Spirit & His Spirit
Things
I previously had no interest in now great interest
A)Chuck Smith says that in Highschool taking Latin
someone wrote this in is Latin book Latin is a
language as boring as can be first it killed the Romans & Now it is killing
me.
B)That is how I felt about reading anything in school
Sports Illustrated and surfing / Especially loathed
History
1) But Now I love to read love history because now
when I read History I dont just think of things past / but now Past/ Present
& Future
C) The bible has written
things out for me in Panoramic view / I
understand things of the past & see how they will relate to the future
D) Playing Golf w/ a one hand guy - good too !
Engineer who work in the Field of Nuclear weapons / Asked him - Will there be a
War Yes definitely
1) / I agree do you want to know why I told
him that the Bible Prophesies things happening in the last days that is very
descriptive of Nuclear weapons
E) HS Makes the Bible come alive Changes your whole world view/ So the HS teaches us opens our eyes to spiritual things
Not
just teaches us but also to Bring to our remembrance things that we have
studied or heard
A)Put the Word of God IN
and the Holy Spirit will bring it OUT of you
B)Have you ever had the
experience of talking with someone and suddenly you begin to quote a Scripture
that you didnt know that you knew?
1)There
are those times when the HS gives to you REMEMBRANCE of those passages of
Scripture that you have read or heard.
Note to
Parents Even if your kids are NOT walking w/ the Lord NOW, the Word
of God needs to be sown into their lives for that time when they will walk with
God.
John 15:26
A)Testify of me = Bear witness ( The HS in our
hearts bears witness to the reality of Christ in the Word In Life
1)
HS communing in you
Discernment this is of me !!!!
B) Talk to new believers
all the time say I didnt know the what the Bible said about this but I
just didnt feel right about ( not the Lord )
1)
That was the HS in
them bearing witness
John 16:7-11 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage
that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but
if I depart, I will send Him to you.
A)Why was it an advantage for Jesus to go
away ( Limited by time & space) but the spirit could be w/ each of them
at all times !!!!
8And when He has come, He will convict the
world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9of sin,
because they do not believe in Me; 10of righteousness, because I go
to My Father and you see Me no more; 11of judgment, because the
ruler of this world is judged.
B)HS in the world
Convict of Sin / Rejected Christ
C)Also of Righteousness : What is Right Our World
tries to say that there is no Absolutes but they Know / Spirit of God tugging
on their hearts
1)
They resist that
D) Also of Judgment This is why
people fear death Spirit of God has placed w/ in their hearts a reality of
Judgment
1)
They can Ignore it but
deep down they know that it is true !!!
Ch.16: V.12-15
A)There were other things that Jesus wanted
to talk to them about He had already tried to tell them about the Crucifixion
& Rez / werent getting it
B) He wanted to talk to
them about / the Church / 2nd coming things John admits they
really didnt understand until after the Cross & Rez.
1) After the HS was Given
C) V.13 Guide you into all truth Guide = to lead in the way
this speaks of more than just the Knowledge of that which is true
1)
But it speaks of the
application of that Knowledge How to put the truth into practice &
action GUIDING MINISTRY
Glorifying
Ministry.
A) The Job & purpose
of the HS is to Point to Christ and to Glorify or to Magnify Christ
B)His Ministry is not to point people to Him / make
him the focal pt
HS this / HS that
C)Declaring Ministry: He will tell you of things to come Our eyes are opened to understand what the Bible declares about Future Prophetic events
So that is the Indwelling work of the HS in the Life of the Believer
A)When did this take place for the Disciples ? John 20:22
B) When does it happen
for us ? The moment we are Born Again
So
the Ministry of the HS is to Help / Aid / to teach / to comfort / Point us to
Christ Guide us in the Truth & to Glorify Christ
A)Our Response is to yield to his leading/The Christian life is a Yielded life
B) Sometimes you might
see an advertisement in the Newspaper that reads something like this : Wanted
a partner w/ capital to develop promising Business
C) What is basically
being said is that the one who placed the add has concept for the business but
is hampered by a lack of funds to make it work make it become a reality so they need a PARTNER
D) Well it doesnt take
long in the Christian experience to discover the same thing to be true I am
lacking in ability & RESOURCES to live this life
1)
I need a Partner
O Sanders The Business of living a truly Christian life is
too exacting in its requirements, too lofty in its ideals, for us to engage in
it alone We need a partner
What
we need is a partner w/ the Adequate resources to get the job done
Exactly
what the Lord Promises - His Divine
Power
.
A)Now the HS is not some silent partner who funnels resources for us to do what we want But He is the Senior partner we are submitted to
B) His personality must
dominate my personality / guide me in my decisions
B) It will mean that
there is no enterprises that I embark on that He hasnt launched / no ideas to
pursue that have not first met his approval
1)
His guidance is
followed & He is consulted in everything / He always has the last word for
he is the senior partner
C)Thus the way to
Victory in the Christian life / the way to growth in times of trial /
1) the way to experience the fullness of
Blessing is in being Yielded to Him
That
is what Paul was describing in Gal 5 when He talked about Walking in the Spirit
A)Walking in the Spirit is a Choice that we make to Yield ourselves to the leading of the HS in our lives & not give into the lust of the flesh
B) Paul describes the war that takes place !
1)Sow to the flesh = destruction list
things that destroy lives v.19-21
C) But if you sow to the spirit if you Yield yourself to the leading of the
Spirit the Fruit of the spirit is the Result
1)
The Fruit of the
Spirit is Love Agape Rest of the list are manifestations of love in our
lives
1)
Goodness is Loves Virtue / Faithfulness is loves Dependability
Gentleness is Loves Meekness / Self Control Loves Discipline
C) That is what the H.S.
is seeking to do in our lives Make us into people
that love
unconditional / people who give Sacrificially
1)
Those
whos Lives are marked by Joy / Stability / Patience & Grace/ Virtue &
Dependability / Meekness & Self-Control
So that is
the Postive side of Yielding to the HS Fruit is the Result
A)The Negative side is that the Spirit can be Grieved & Quenched
B) First Describe Quenched 1Thes 5:19/ Quenched describes what occurs when something is on fire burning bright
1) Suddenly it is quenched - the fire is put out
The
Yeilded Christian is one who is going to be on fire / His life is ignited the
Lord is working in Him & thru Him
A) But that can change
when we begin to resist the HS leading in doing so Quenched
B) Think of it this way
Lakers last 3 series been on fire / everything has been clicking / all
cylinders rolling ( in the Zone )
1)
Now have almost 2 wks
lay off Fire Quenched / by inactivity
C) The same thing is
true in our lives HS Quenched by inactivity
1)
He always wanting to
use us but when We are not responding to his leading / or open to being used
like turning the Faucet off
Grieving the
Spirit is a little different Heaviness of Sorrow Eph 4
A)Paul list some things
that can grieve the HS v. 25 31 basically a list that mirrors in some respects
the works of the flesh
B)V.25 Lying / v.26,27
Anger/ v.28 Stealing/ V.29 Corrupt speech / v.30-32 bitterness /
1) those are things that when coming forth
from the life of the believer cause great grief
But
the grief that Paul speaks of is grief in the purest sense of the word! Let me explain
A.)I experience grief to
a certain degree daily : someone cuts me off / I'm inconvenienced
1.) My kids can cause me grief - long day trying talk to Denise
interrupt
B.) I get grieved - why? Because I'm
inconvenienced./ Annoyed
But
that is not grief in the purest sense of the word. That is not the type of grief our Lord experiences. - not for
Himself
A.) "Rob hurt my feelings" - "Rob
isn't obeying me" - "Rob isn't listening
to me"
1.) Grief the Lord
experiences isn't directed at Himself but
toward us!
Our best interest! Because we are missing out!
B.) Parents understand
this: we experience grief at times when we know - kids not fulfilling potential. They're missing out!
1.) pain: we see them
going into a situation that is going to hurt
them
C.) But our pain is for them: that is grief in purest sense of the word. That's what the Lord experiences.
1.) He grieves because He has so much for me - but
because of my
stubbornness - my sin / I'm missing out
D.) That is His heart! He greives for us - because we are missing out on His best for
us!
Finally
there is one more aspect of the HS ministry in the life of the Believer This
goes beyond teaching / declaring / pointing to Christ
A) That of His empowering or enabling Note Ezk 36:27 again cause you to walk in my statues & keep .
Acts 1:4
A)Upon You= overflowing
Baptized = immersed vs just having your toe in
the water Not you getting more of Him / but Him getting more of You
B) Wind in the Sail
1) John 7 Torrents of Living water Waterfalls out front float water source comes from w/ in Fills up & over flows
D) Yielded life that
Desires to be used the HS who fills Him will then seek to overflow that individual
to make him / her a blessing to others
C) Purpose to be
Witnesses
When
does this occur ? Usually after conversion when a person has a desire to be
used by the Lord
A)How does it Happen ? Key words Promise
Luke 24: 49Behold, I send the
Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are
endued with power from on high.
Luke 11: 13If you then, being
evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your
heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!
Eph 5:18 / Once baptized we need that Daily Filling Result
A)Personal life 3 areas 1st our
Conversation v.19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
B)
Not describing some the sound of
Music conversations break into song -
How was your day dear (Idea
is more spiritual content to conversation
C)2nd v.19 More of a desire to worship -singing and making melody in
your heart to the Lord,
1) Worship is the Outflow of Spirit filled life Not warm up to the message or just to fill time
D)3rd v.20 Attitude of Thanksgiving in General
-20giving thanks always for all
things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Also affects
Domestic life : v.21-6:4
A)Lives that are marked by a Mutual submission to the Lord and an acceptance of His Divinely ordained roles in the Home
B) Seen in a wives
willingness to submit to her husband because she is submitted to the Lord
1)
It is seen in a
Husbands Desire to be that Spiritual leader & servant to His family loving
them as Christ loved the Church
C) It is seen in the
inner action between parents & Children
3rd
Business life 6:5-9
A)Seen in the way that an employee works not seeking to be a man pleaser but to please the Lord
B) Seen in the way that
Employer treats his workers w/ Fairness / and Grace

The real marks of the spirits fullness in our
lives does not consist of certain emotional states or exalted feelings, but it
is has a very practical affect upon a persons life The spirit filled life is
an outflowing life whose soul object is to glorify Christ in the daily details
of life & service
