Hebrews 10:1-39 The One Sacrifice of the New Covenant.

Intro: The Focus of Heb 8-10 been on the New Covenant that Jesus established thru His Death & Rez./ All that entails

A.)    We have seen that our Lord's Priesthood belongs to a Superior order - Melch - not Aaron's

B.)    WE have seen that He functions on the Basis of a better Covenant Established on better promises/ He ministers in a better sanctuary - the true!

C) But all of this depends upon and is based on His better sacrifice!

That is the  Theme of the 1st ½ of  chapter 10

 1) The 2nd ½ exhorts us as to how we should live in light of What Christ has done / ( Focus of our study on Sunday)

D) And then we are given a warning concerning – those who would turn away from Christ ( Look at the whole Ch. Tonight) Read v.1-4

In ch.10:1 the writer mentions what he has  already stated that O. C. was a shadow     ch.9:9 ( symbolic ) ( All Scarifies Shadows )

A) Shadow is interesting ; it has form but no substance - a shadow in & of it self is really useless.

B) The shadow of a key cannot unlock a door  -- big Mac  cannot        satisfy hunger; more hungry/ And The shadow of Calvary could not take away sin!

C) The endless offerings of the Levitical ritual could never make those who came perfect!/  Perfect = Holy Righteous / Clear Conscience

E)In fact in v.3 he says that those sacrifices were actually a reminder of sins

   1) The Day of Atonement – really a reminder / sinners – need Covering

Think of it in this way: Lets say a business man goes to bank to request loan for business venture .

A) He has friend who is wealthy who agrees to endorse the

note & repay the debt should the venture fail.

B)So the loan is made ; the promissory note is drawn up ; rate

of interest is set; business man signs note; his friend endorses it

1)A yr. passes & the Businessman's expectations have not         materialized

C) He goes back to the bank and asks for further credit and for an extension of time on his expired loan

1)The banker agrees and draws up a new promissory note adding the new debt carried forward another year

D.)    This goes on and on  the loan is getting larger and larger every year and the business man is getting deeper and deeper in debt

1.)     Each year there is a reminder of his former debt & of his new liabilities

E.)The only thing that keeps him afloat is the endorsement of his friend!

That is similar to what happened in O.T. - the animal sacrifices were like promissory notes

A.)    Bringing them to the altar the Israelites acknowledged their        accumulating debt was covered for another year!

B.)But in reality Each sacrifice carried w/ it the endorsement of the Son of God, who guaranteed He would fully repay all of the liabilities acknowledged by the sinner!

C.)And When Christ died at Calvary - he removed the debt - something        - sacrifice of bulls goats could never do- Take away sins!

D) Now when Jesus at Passover – Said As often as you do this do it in remembrance of me – whole Different meaning

     1) Not remember Your sins but remember your Savior / Not sin/ Salvation

V.5 Therefore – Because the Blood of bulls & goats could not take away sins

A)Because  it was only a 1yr. covering / people still plagued by a guilty conscience – their Conscience wasn’t Cleansed

Read v.5-9

B) V.5-7 are taken from Psa 40:6-8 insight into planning meeting between Father and Son  { Plan to Save the World }

1.) He would be given a Body – He would become flesh & dwell among

us - Incarnation -             God in the flesh!

C)Because God did not delight in sacrifice and offerings - purpose?

1.)     They were meant to be a picture - a shadow of the final          sacrifice

D)When Jesus came into the world – He didn’t come to offer more Sacrifices / He was given a Body – to be the Sacrifice

E) Jesus came to do the will of the Father which was to Liberate Man / to open the door thru which man could have a Relationship w/ God

1)   In doing so He fulfilled the Mission – Accomplished the will of God He takes away the first that He might establish the 2nd

When Jesus cried out from the Cross It is Finished – it wasn’t one of self Gratification

A)But it was meant to get our Attention Hey look what I did for You

The work is done / It is finished

B) No longer a Need for any more Sacrifices

C) Personal Application for us – We can have the tendency to still get caught up in the Sacrifice mode – “ …. Doing for God”

D) But we learn something here from our Lord that we must not lose sight of – God is not interested in Sacrifices –

1)   What He wants is for us to DO HIS WILL  - General & Specific App

General is that we would Know Him / fellowship w/ Him

A)Some people running around all their Sacrifices – God is saying stop and spend time w/ Me

B) Example Take my wife!  I could send flowers, write cards - do laundry, buy outfits - but wouldn’t be any good if never spent time with her!

 1) Wouldn’t mean anything if only gave her 2 hours a week

She wants to be with me!   ( For some reason)

C) So too the Lord wants our friendship - He wants our communion first and foremost- Abraham - friend of God!

1)   David - man after God's own heart!

Specific application: God says I want you to do this – Step of faith or repent of this situation / Change that Attitude

A)We can run around doing everything but what He is desiring that we do – all sacrifices – No pleasure – He is looking for Specific Obedience

B) His Commandments are His Enablements

So Jesus came to do the will of God  Gave His Body to be Bruised for Us v.10 By that will Jesus fulfilling the will of God we have been sanctified Set apart …  through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

Now v.14 is interesting because / it lays out both our Positional & Practical Sanctification

A)Positional – perfected forever – Complete – Holy Righteous – Our Position In Christ –

B)But that is not what we see when we look in the Mirror - / Ok – We are Being Sanctified – Process – God working in us thru his spirit

V.15- Spirit bears witness – V.15-18

A)So the Spirit in our Hearts Ezk 36  bears witness that this NC has been established – which means that the Levitical Sacrifices are completely meaning less ( He established the New / Took away the Old )

B)So if there is no remembrance of Sins because of what Christ did on Calvary, why continue in the offerings

C) Now as we come to v.19 –We move into the Exhortation – we looked at on Sunday Read v.19-21

Therefore – Because of what Jesus has done - We have Boldness to enter into the Holiest – Access to God – Intimacy

A)BY  His blood – BY  A New & Living Way which He Consecrated or dedicated for us, through the Veil , that is , His flesh

B) Interesting that the writer here is referring to the Humanity of Jesus has being the Veil

     1) The Veil separated the HP from the HH . It was a Wall – No entrance

It wasn’t until the Veil was Rent – Unseen hand of God – Access

C) How is the Humanity of Christ like the Veil ? The entrance into the HH was beyond the Veil

  1) Jesus Humanity  showed us the Way to God – I am the Way / the Door

D) But if Jesus had only Lived & not died – His life would stand forever as a Declaration of No Entrance – Only if you could measure up to His Standard

But When Christ went to the Cross He was rent by the unseen hand of God – Broken for us – took the Wrath

A)His Blood was shed – Only then was the way of Access opened up

B) His Death & Rez established the New & Living way – Living because He is alive –

1)   Because He is alive – v.21 We have a High Priest

C) Having said that – He goes into the Exhortation we looked at in-depth on Sunday v.22-25 – (read )

1)   Let us Draw near

2)   Lets us Hold fast

3)   Let us Stir up each  other

Now at this point the writer gives a very stern warning to his readers

A)Your reaction to a warning is dependent upon your relationship to it

B) Sat. Beach Harbor w/ family – Warning Heavy surf – Bummed – careful for your kids

1)   But if you are there w/ your buddy to surf – STOKED

C) Drive up into the MTS – Heavy Snow Advisory – Bummed Chains

1)   Snow Boarder / Skier – Excited

D) If you just went to get your hair done – ( News High Winds – Bummed )

     1) Hair Dresser – Excited –   ( All depends on your relationship to the

         warning

Consider the warning V. 26 – 31

A)Now this passage has cause some confusion amongst believers and the place where they get tripped up is w/ this phrase sin willfully

B) Quest.: How many of you like me – have sinned Willfully this week?

1)   Sins of Omission – Sins of Commission – To him who knows what is right to do ……. It is sin !!

C) Driving home last night – Sinned willfully

Does that mean that I am going to hell –

This is where Context is so important: This book is written to  Jewish believers who …….. going back

A)The Willful sin that he is describing is that of going back into the rules and Regulations of Judaism as the basis for their Salvation

B) He makes that clear in v. 38      Now the just shall live by faith;

But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.”

C) The willful sin that He is referring to is going back to the Old life

D) This is the point – After spending all this time – Better Ministry of Jesus Better Sacrifice – the New has done away w/ the Old

1)   If you are going to go back to living under the OC w/ all of it’s rituals and sacrifice – Know this – There is No Sacrifice for Sins

In other words there is nothing that you can personally do to affect your salvation – There is One Sacrifice for Sin –Jesus Sacrifice

A)If you are going to make the Basis of your salvation Your own performance – You will be judged on that Basis

B) What awaits those people is fearful expectation of Judgment Fiery indignation

1)   Not going to be a Pretty Picture

C) V.28 If those who rejected the OC died w/ out Mercy – No mercy for them

1)   V.29 Even worse for those who have rejected Christ

For them to go back into Judaism was rejecting Christ

A) to do so is to Trample the Son of God Under foot / Counted His Shed blood to be a Common thing Insulted Spirit of grace =  HS

B)Can’t have it both ways – Jesus & Laws – Paul made clear – another gospel let them be accursed

C) So by going back to the old Sacrifices & rituals they were trampling on the body of Christ – rejecting His work on the Cross

D)And that is what is happening when a person goes back to the old life

   1) Essentially saying Jesus I know that you died to set me free / give me life but I don’t care – I am living this way

E) Does that mean if a person turns away they can’t return ?

  1) It means that until they do there is  No Sacrifice – there is nothing they can personally do to be right w/ God – No Personal sacrifice

Rob it sounds like you are saying that people can lose their salvation?

A)No people don’t lose their salvation- Not misplaced – but the scriptures do indicate that people leave it

B) That is what these Hebrews believers were being tempted to do

1)   Paul talked about Demas – left Loved this present world

C) 1 Tim 4 Last days some will depart from the Faith

D) Well does that mean that they are going to be sent to Hell ?

1)   I don’t know – this doesn’t sound pretty to me Fiery Indignation / fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God – Judgment

E) What exactly is he referring to ? I don’t know but I don’t want to find out

So the warning is given – Listen if you are trusting in Christ for your salvation – Wonderful warning – ( Assurance not me / Not worried )

A)Not hands of Judgment but arms of Love

B) If you are trying to come to God on your own merits – Good person is going to get you in – Be warned

1)    If Go back – doing own thing -  ( Rejecting the Cross- Be warned – trampling Christ                     Rap up v.32 –34

C) Not wimps They had already endured great trial – persecution – don’t give up Now / Hang in there – Heaven is waiting

D) Today people go back to the old life for far less reasons

1)   Marriage is rough / finances are struggling /

E) No concept of Heaven – so earthly focused
