Exodus 1:1-22 – A Message of Redemption

The theme of the Book of Gen. Was that of Creation / Beg. Of the World / Beg. Of Animal Kingdom / the Beg. Of Man

  1. Beg. Of Sin
  2. Gen. Starts w/ Creation – God looked at the World He had made & said IT IS GOOD !!!!
  3. But man messed up – SIN entered into the World / w/ it – See the First Murder & the Affects of Sin which is death !!!
  4. Gen. Began w/ CREATION & a Beautiful GARDEN – Ends w/ a Coffin in Egypt –
  1. Many ways it is a very sad – Commentary on How Sin – Destroyed what God had Created

 

But that is not the end of the Story – Move into Exodus – theme is Redemption – Salvation

  1. In Exodus we see God’s Heart for Fallen man & God’s Plan to set them Free !!!!

B) Five Divisions of the Book

1st – Ch. 1-6 We See the Need for Redemption ( Pictured by the People

Enslaved

2nd –Ch. 7-11 See the Might of the Redeemer – Displayed by the

Plagues

3rd – Ch.12-18 We see the Character of Redemption – Purchased by Blood & Set free By Power !!!

4th – Ch. 19 to 24 We are taught the Duty of redemption – Which is OBEDIENCE TO THE LORD !!!

5TH – Ch. 25 to 40 We have the Provisions made for the FAILURES of the Redeemed

 

Exodus is a Picture Book – Been said that every Principle found in the N.T. is seen By way of a Picture in the N.T.

  1. Principles in N.T. are Illustrated in the O.T. – which is certainly true as it relates to the Book of Exodus
  2. In many ways the Principles Presented in N.T. books such as Romans Gal. / Ephesians & Hebrews are Illustrated in THIS BOOK

    1) See The Intervention of Divine Grace - / Deliverer is raised up

  4. See the Principles of Blood W/ out the Shedding of Blood……sins / The Blood of the Passover Lamb – Pointing to Jesus
  1. The Crossing of the Red Sea – Pictures our Union w/ Christ in His death & Resurrection. – Picture of Baptism

The Journey through the Wilderness is a picture of the Trials & Test that we go through in our Pilgrimage w/ the Lord – How He meets every need

  1. The Giving of the law Pictures the need for our Obedience & Submission to our New Master
  2. The Tab. Prefigured the varied Blessings of the New Covenant. In Christ
  1. Book of Many Lessons and Pictures

Listen Paul’s words in 1 Cor. 10: 11 All these events happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us, who live at the time when this age is drawing to a close.

  1. If you think you are standing strong, be careful, for you, too, may fall into the same sin.
  1. The Things we see in this book that happened to Israel are given for a Warning for us that we might Learn from their Mistakes

1) History has a Way of Repeating Itself – Be Careful – Miss out on what the Lord has for us because of Unbelief

BEGIN: Read v. 1-7

So the Book begins by making mention of that Original group that came into the Land of Egypt – Jacob & His Sons / their families

  1. 70 people in all – Joseph & his family were already there
  2. Why Did God send – them to Egypt ? Promise to Abe – make you are great Nation / Lead you to a Great Land
  1. Pit stop in Egypt that last – 400 yrs
  1. If taking notes the answer is TWO FOLD - 1st Prepare the People for the land –
  1. God sent the Children of Israel to this land – where they were going to be a Safe & Warm for a Season to Grow
  1. Egypt – under Joseph’s Influence was like a INCUBATOR -

During that time & the Centuries that Followed – where Joseph was Remembered the Nation was able to Grow – Multiply ( 70 to 21/2 Mill)

  1. So first it was to prepare the People for the land /
  2. 2nd to Prepare the land for the people - See back in Gen. 15 – God told Abe what He was going to do - & why ( turn )

13 Then He said to Abram: "Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.

14 "And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

15 "Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.

  1. "But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete."
  1. Notice God says that they will be Strangers in this land for 400 yrs / end up being afflicted –
  2. But in the 4th Gen. They will return to the Land of Canaan – because the iniquity of the Amorites / the Canaanites not yet Complete
  3. What mean ? Basically God saying I am going to give the Amorites 400 yrs to Repent – to turn from the Wickedness
  1. Yet God in His Foreknowledge knew that they were not going to repent – only get Worse
  1. Never accuse God of not being Fair – waits – 400 yrs

 

But after 400 yrs He is going to send His people into this land w/ very clear instructions – Wipe out the Inhabitants – Now is that HARSH?

  1. No – Wisdom – Dog w/ Rabies – Doctor dealing w/ Cancer
  2. So Prepare the People for the place & the Place for the People !!!!

 

V.8 –

 

 

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

9 And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we;

  1. "come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land."

The yr. Is 1445 B.C. this New King or Pharaoh’s name was Setti – He knew nothing of Joseph /

  1. But not only reason why he wanted to afflict the Hebrews – Historical Reason / Spiritual Reason & A Practical Reason

B) HISTORICAL - Setti also had a problem – his #1 enemy the Hittites

in the North were growing in Number & threatening his kingdom

    1. he feared that the Hebrews would – revolt & Join them & that Egypt would be over thrown / States in v. 10

C)SPIRITUAL – there was also a Reason – Satan Inspired – Satan

wanted to destroy the Hebrew nation -

1) Gen. 3 THE SEED - Been His aim to get rid of the Seed –

destroy the Race – Destroy the Chance of the Messiah

  1. Satan Inspired Plan – just like w/ Hammond in the Book of Esther & just like w/ Herod in the N.T. – do away w/ the Seed –
  1. Even like w/ HITLER in Recent History –
  1. Now in the case of HITLER he was seeking to Destroy the people Jesus was coming back to Reveal Himself to
  1. No nation no one to Rule !!!!

 

But Also a Practical Reason – It was meant to make the People Strong

  1. Weight training – Only way to Increase Strength is to break down the Muscle – let rest – sleep – builds itself back up
  2. Faith is a Muscle- one of the ways that our Faith gets stronger is when we go through Trials & testings
  1. So the Lord will allow us to go through those things as part of the spiritual Muscle Building Process in our Lives

Golfers find this interesting :

When they first manufactured golf balls, they made the covers smooth. Then it was discovered that after a ball had been roughed up one could get more distance out of it. So they started manufacturing them with dimpled covers.

So it is with life in the Lord it takes some rough spots in your life to make you go your farthest.

James 1: 2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,

3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
  1. Good to realize that – and be thankful for the Trials we go through

When he was 7 years of age, his family was forced out of their home, and he went to work. When he was 9, his mother died. He lost his job as a store clerk when he was 20. He wanted to go to law school, but he didn't have the education. At age 23 he went into debt to be a partner in a small store.3yrs later the business partner died, & the resulting debt took years to repay.

When he was 28, after courting a girl for four years, he asked her to marry him, and she turned him down. On his third try he was elected to Congress, at age 37, but then failed to be re-elected. His son died at 4 years of age. When this man was 45, he ran for the Senate and lost. At age 47 he ran for the vice-presidency and lost. But at age 51 he was elected president of the United States.

The man was Abraham Lincoln, a man who learned to face discouragement and move beyond it.

In 1863,in the mist of the Civil War - He established the annual celebration of Thanksgiving? Lincoln had learned how important it is to stop and thank God in the midst of great difficulties.

So Setti’s solution was to deal shrewdly w/ them – But Notice V. 12

12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel.
  1. That has always been the case w/ God’s People – Churches History is marked w/ some very dark times intense persecution –
  1. Times when Satan was trying to stop the Church – but instead of weakening it – the persecution just made it Stronger
  1. Persecution had a Purging affect – It has a way of separating us from the World – Refining Process – Do I really want to Name this ?

Psa.119:67 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.

Setti’s method of dealing w/ them is seen in v. 11.13,14 –

11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Raamses.

13 So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor. ( Cruelty
  1. And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage; in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.

 

The goal here was to break their spirit’s & Rob them of everything that was meaningful & important to them .

  1. Made slaves out of them & sought to Rob them of all their Dignity
  2. This is Satan’s goal in the World today – Make people slaves to Sin bondage to Vices / Burdened by Guilt & Condemnation
  3. One of his #1 tools today is Pornography / growth – startling – Statistics multi Billion dollar Business
  1. Heard a report KPRZ 1 Million Porno sights on the Internet growing by 1000 a day

 

The Word Task masters can Literally be Translated – gang overseers or gang masters – afflict them w/ burdens

  1. I thought that was Interesting – Gang influence in our Culture - Overlords – afflict burdens on kids
  2. But Whether it is gangs / Drugs / Pornography / Money – Satan’s goal is to tear down / Tie up / Rip off / and Destroy
  3. Sad to see the families & Lives that have been ruined by Sin !!!!

 

Notice when this doesn’t work – His Methods only get Worse v. 15

15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; and he said, "When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live."
  1. Principles: 1st Wickedness unchecked will always lead to more wickedness / Moves from Burden Layer to Murder
  1. Pot – leads to Crystal – Cocaine – Heroin
  1. Porno mags lead to Movies /
  2. 2nd Those who are Perverse also try to pull others into their perversion & Wickedness – Those demented try to make others Demented
  1. Pharaoh w/ the Midwives Murders

 

We saw an example of this Yesterday – tragedy in Denver –

A)Marylin Manson – Very perverse Guy – admitted Devil worshipper – sick

individual – Breast implants – Bazaar

B)Promotes this type of thing in His Songs

A mannequin of depression /With the face of a dead star

And I was a hand grenade /That never stopped exploding / You were automatic and as hollow as the "o" in god

I am never gonna be the one for you (chorus repeat)

This isn't me I'm not mechanical / I'm just a boy playing the suicide king

C)Now there are those who try to say – that stuff doesn’t have any influence on these kids –

  1. then – why did all the Kids who shooting sprees in last 2 yrs – Listen to his Music ? No Coincidence
  1. Guard your Kids / Protect your Kids / Please Pay attention to what they are watching – what they are Listening to / Don’t be Naïve / Good kids
  1. And Pray for Your Kids – ( Parents praying for Teens )
  1. What pray ? – the very thing that we see in v. 17
  1. But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive.

 

 

 

 

Pray that they would have a Healthy fear of God -

  1. Psa 36 – list the characteristics of the person who doesn’t fear God

LISTEN

36:1 An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes.

2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes, When he finds out his iniquity and when he hates. SELF FLATTERY / EXALTATION / CENTERNESS

3 The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit; He has ceased to be wise and to do good. PERVERSE SPEECH & ACTIONS

4 He devises wickedness on his bed; He sets himself in a way that is not good; He does not abhor evil. EVIL IMAGINATIONS

But Consider the Blessing of the person who has the fear of the Lord in their hearts

  1. Job 28:28 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.'"

  2. Psa.111: 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;

Prov.1: 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,

Prov.8: 13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil;

Prov.10: 27 The fear of the LORD prolongs days, But the years of the wicked will be shortened.

Prov.14: 26 In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge.

  1. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, To turn one away from the snares of death.

Prov. 15: by the fear of the LORD one departs from evil.

Prov. 19: 23 The fear of the LORD leads to life, And he who has it will abide in satisfaction; He will not be visited with evil.

Prov.23: 17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the LORD all the day;

  1. For surely there is a hereafter, And your hope will not be cut off.

Motivation for having the fear of the Lord –

  1. HEAVEN - there is a here after –
  2. The World is telling our kids – there is no tomorrow – so live for today – WE NEED TO TELL THEM THE OPPOSITE
  3. But if are going to tell them – we also need to live it out !!!!

 

FINISH UP –

18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?"

19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them."

20 Therefore God dealt (HARSHLY ? NO!!) dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty.

21 And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them. ( Had Children – no longer barren )

22 So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "Every son who is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive."

Now this is confusing to some how could God Bless these women when they lied ? 2 Principles here

  1. 1st is that I am to obey those in authority over me / Govt. / Spiritually as well as in my family – Rom. 13 makes clear
  2. I am to submit my self to & obey their authority – accept when what they are asking me to do something that violates what God says
  3. EXAMPLE: Acts 5 – Preaching – ordered to stop because they had FILLED JERUSALEM W/ THE NAME OF JESUS

  4. How did Peter respond ? Your telling us not to Preach ? But Jesus told us to take the Gospel to all the World – Obey God or man / Certainly GOD

Col. 3: 18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

 

2nd Principle – How could God Bless their Lying –

  1. It seems that God was majoring on what they did Good – instead of focusing on what they did bad
  2. They feared Him – and God approves the things that are excellent
  3. Higher moral law Obey God – ( NOT MURDER) – Rahab –
