Exodus Ch.2:1-25 How God makes a Man

Intro: We have seen that the Children of Israel had grown in Egypt

  1. New Pharaoh – didn’t know Joseph – 400 yrs past
  1. viewed the Hebrews as a Threat –
  1. Sought to Break their Spirits through – Heavy Labor / grew more
  1. Employ midwives - They feared God
  1. Finally – Decreed – throw all the New born Hebrew male babies into the Nile – ( Illustration of how Wickedness always grows more wicked)

Pick up in Ch. 2 :1-4

Now we met Moses Parents in our Last study – Talked about the Importance of having a VISION FOR YOUR CHILD

  1. See when it says in v. 2 that they saw that their son – was a beautiful child – it is speaking about so much more than – outward Beauty
  2. It is really – speaking of a Spiritual Perception – ( Good thing Moses wasn’t an ugly) – Baby – others – Throw him out – he is ugly)
  1. No Parents in their right mind would do such a thing
  1. The idea being Presented here by saying that this Child was Beautiful is that they looked at this Child - & saw & Believed that God had a plan
  1. And because of that Belief – they were given the Courage, the faith & the Grace to do what ever it took to Preserve his life .

OH HOW WE NEED TO HAVE A SIMILAR VISION FOR OUR KIDS

  1. But notice that there came a point for Amram & Jocabed – where they finally had to let go & say – Lord He is in your Hands/ Expose to World
  2. Now it came – much earlier for them than it does for us – but all of us reach a point – where we have to say – Ok Lord – Here you go

Hebr. 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king's command.

  1. Their Faith in God – took away their FEAR OF THE KING –They
  2. trusted that God would PRESERVE and PROTECT that child 1) even though things looked pretty brutal – they placed him in the

River the very place the other kids were being Killed !!!

  3. As we see the World around us getting crazy- our hearts can be filled w/ fear – ( Natural tendency )

  1. But We don't have to ISOLATE our children in fear

But We should INSULATE them with faith

C) Believe that God will see them through the river experience

  1. That does NOT mean that we simply sit by and say, I believe it will be

well with my child

D) Faith moves us to PRAYER

  1. Faith moves us to TEACH them the truth about God, sin and life

E) COURSON- FAMILY DEVOTIONS - 5 nights a weak

Watch what the Lord does – next – v.5-10

NOTE SEVERAL THINGS

  1. 1ST Divine Orchestration of this meeting : In Egypt during that time the House of Pharaoh – own personal bathing pools
  2. But on this day – Pharaoh’s Daughter decides to do her bathing at the River – Coincidence right ?
  1. God was Moving to Orchestrate this meeting – perfect time / perfect Place / & just the right time gave Moses a Pinch – Cried
  1. Notice 2nd the Divine Blessing – Jochebed's Faith – Miriam – Shall I get a women to Nurse – gets Mom –
  1. She gets her son Back – No more fear - & She Gets Paid to take car of him – what a DEAL !!!!!
  1. 3rd thing : This would be God’s Plan for Part of Moses training – between two worlds

He would grow up in the Palace –but He would grow up Knowing about Yaweh

  1. He being the Only son of Pharaohs daughter – who apparently didn’t have a son of his own – was being trained to take over the Empire
  2. There is an Interlude between v.10 & 11 of Ex. 2/ N.T. gives us some insight – Acts 7: 22 "And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds.
  3. Moses INTELLECTUALLY had it TOGETHER – very smart trained in the Best – Schools - Univ. of Egypt –
  1. Historian Josephus tells us that Moses was also an accomplished Military Leader –
  1. Trained to be Next –known ruler of the World – but he walked away from all of that to serve His God / & Suffer w/ His people

Question why did God do it this way – Why did he not get Moses out of the City – Like did w/ Jesus at Beth. – Chance to Grow somewhere else

  1. Why – did He have Moses grow up in this setting & Culture / admist so much power & Prosperity ? 3 reasons
  2. 1st –Great Illustration – Worldly Pleasures don’t compare w/ a Life Lived for God !!!!!! Turn to Heb. 11

  1. By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, ( Next Ruler of Known World ) WHY?
  2. choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,

There is the 1st Answer: He realized that Sin is a Passing Pleasure !!!

  1. Sure there is Pleasure in Sin – but it doesn’t last – doesn’t Satisfy
  2. It brings only a Temporary Satisfaction – Think about anything ever bought - If I only had this – Car surf board – Living room set
  1. How long does it last until you are saying – Now you know what I want
  1. Sin is the same way – Satan deceives us into thinking that this is what we really need to experience
  1. This is what we are Lacking – We really do deserve this
  1. And there is Pleasure – for a Moment – but it fades – trapped ensnared

E) Like all sin, there's a difference between the appearance and the reality, between the momentary feeling and the lasting effect.

It has Been said

Flirtation with sin can lead to romance with Satan.

The pleasures of sin are "for a season," but its wages are for eternity.

Not only does the Pleasure of Sin not last it is also Deadly

Rob Hubbard’s Illustration- Back draft -

Moses realized that all the sin that Egypt offered was a Passing Pleasure

A) He saw it for what it was !!!!

2nd The Life of Moses Teaches us where our Focus needs to be !!! -Moses Choose instead to Live for Heaven

26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.

  1. Moses chose to set his eyes on the Things of God – Store up treasure in heaven not on earth !!!!!!
  2. Saved in 4th Grade – 5th grade – Sunday school teacher – told me that I was going to be a pastor -
  1. I remember thinking – You are crazy - Pastors are Poor – I want to be a Professional Baseball Player – Big Bucks
  1. And I spent a Lot of yrs pursuing that goal – and although I knew the Lord – not much treasure being stored up in Heaven
  1. I look now – the last thing I would want to do – so much greed corruption & Immorality involved
  1. Moses saw Egypt for what it was because He had a vision of God – and a Heaven !!!

Phil Grant. Leadership,

A vision is the dominant factor that governs your life. It determines all the choices you are making. It's what's left after all the layers are peeled away like an onion. Clinging like glue to the inside of your rib cage. ... It's what your mind naturally gravitates toward when it is not legitimately concentrating on something else. It's ... what determines your friendships and your relationships that you are cultivating. ... It's what your prayers are about--what you dream about and are giving money toward.

Moses had a Vision of Heaven – Eyes on the Lord –

Note v.27 Word Endured = to bear up courageously –

  1. Not a passive – Oh I hope I can make it – but a confident decisive & Patient attitude that – Moves me & Motivates me

3rdly The life of Moses Illustrates for us – maybe like no other place in the Bible –

  1. It is not by might nor by Power /nor by Human ingenuity or by or by Intellectual Strategizing – but BY MY SPIRIT SAYS THE LORD
  2. We see that Very clearly illustrated in this story - The Life of Moses can be Divided into THREE - 40 yr. Sections lived 120yrs
  1. 1st 40 yrs in Egypt Moses Spends becoming a Somebody in Egypt – Well Trained / Well thought of / Well Liked
  1. Next 40 yrs – Moses – spends in the Desert – becoming a Nobody – being Broken – Learning how to trust in the Lord
  1. That is followed by the last 40 yrs – where Moses is the man God uses to Lead EVERYBODY –

Turn back to Ex. Pick up in v.11 -

11 Now it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren and looked at their burdens. And he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren.

  1. So he looked this way and that way, and when he saw no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

Here we see Moses trying to Take Matters into his own hands –

Made 2 Mistakes

  1. Looked this way & that way – but He didn’t Look up – didn’t look to the Lord -
  2. I have found that in Every endeavor – where didn’t seek the Lord – Disaster !!!!
  3. Next Mistake – was that He Tried to Hide His Sin!!!!! –
  1. Your sin will always find you out –
  1. Moses effort in the Flesh Backfired – Read v. 13-15

13 And when he went out the second day, behold, two Hebrew men were fighting, and he said to the one who did the wrong, "Why are you striking your companion?"

14 Then he said, "Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?" So Moses feared and said, "Surely this thing is known!"

15 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well.

So Begins Moses 2nd 40 yrs - Desert / Seasons of Breaking/ blessing

  1. This is the DESERT TIME – A time of Breaking –where he will learn that before he looks this way & that way – He looks to the Lord
  2. What does God – think – what is God’s Will – What is God’s Way
  3. It was here in the Desert that Moses – Learns how to be a man Governed by God !!!!
  1. My first 2 yrs in Oregon – was such a time – Learned how to rely upon the Lord – How to really Pray – Out of Necessity
  1. There were so many things that I learned here that I never thought about – it was the Norm – ( Darrel Mansfield )

A woman asked G. Campbell Morgan, "Do you think we ought to pray about even the little things in life?"

Dr. Morgan, in his typically understated British manner, replied, "Madam, can you think of anything in your life that is big to God?"

(Leonard Ravenhill). "The church has many organizers, but few agonizers; many who pay, but few who pray; many resters, but few wrestlers; many who are enterprising, but few who are interceding.

A worldly Christian will stop praying and a praying Christian will stop worldliness.

Tithes may build a church, but tears will give it life. That is the difference between the modern church and the early church. In the matter of effective praying, never have so many left so much to so few. Brethren, let us pray''

The Christian life can be compared to flying an Airplane.

A) There are times when we encounter smooth sailing /

things are just flowing / making progress.

B) There are other times when we encounter turbulence

the ride can get a little rocky to say the least .

C)Then there are those times when things get real foggy it is hard to

see where you are going .

1) You need to come in for a landing , you need to get some rest but you just can't find the airport.

For those who fly there are four things they teach you to do

when you are in a jam/ when need to get into Airport.

A) Climb - Take the plane up as high as you can.

1) 2nd Confess - let those know on ground lost / trouble need help

B) 3rd Communicate - Open uplines of communication give coordinates where you are at.

1)4th Conform- Do whatever that guy on the ground tells you to do!

Moses time in the Desert would be about learning these things

  1. Climb – seek to Know God – later – Lord should me your glory
  2. Desire to Know God – get close to God –
  3. Way to victory is to Climb: Pilot / Moppet field / Gnawing / rat/

Take it higher / rat can't survive in air up there.

  4. As we seek to Climb draw near to the Lord / see sin & the World for
  5. what it is & it is dealt w/ see this world for what it is Passing.

    CONFESS - "I am lost , I need help - I don't have it together"

    A) This can be humbling / but it is necessary/ Creates dependency

1)Most people we see the Lord using go through this Moses no exception.

    B) In Egypt Moses thought he knew God's plan / realized the Lord had raised him up to deliver the People.

    1) Take matters in own hands/ Egyptian. / Stop argument

    C) Fled into the Desert / Became a shepherd.

    1) There Moses learned what every man of faith learns there

is a need to be broken.

  6. That Confession – opened the Door for COMMUNICATION-For Moses to hear from the Lord –
  1. And that resulted as we shall see w/a Desire in Moses heart to CONFORM to be all that God Wanted Him to be .

Seen in the following verses Read. V. 16-25

Note v. 21 – Content to be a Shepherd – Lowest profession in Egypt

v.22 – Reveals why – Named his son Gershom – A Stranger in a Strange Land - that is us !!!!
