Matthew 9:18-26 Convergence

Intro: Convergence is what happens when 2 forces intersect at a certain point – creating a collision

A)We have all seen that happen – on the Football field  Linebacker meets running back crushing hit

B) DE meets QB- for a Blind side sack

C) Maybe you have seen it on the Baseball field as well – SS collides with CF – chasing shallow fly ball

D) Worse Yet maybe you have seen it – Road way – Collision at an Intersection

Those moments of Conversion can be Painful and Dangerous

But tonight we are looking at a Story of Convergence that takes place – in two lives who intersect at the person of Jesus Christ

The Story is one of my favorite in the NT -

Jesus is once again in Capernaum

While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, "My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live." 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.

The other gospel writers tells us more:

Name Jairus

Ruler of the Synagogue

Problem: 12yr old only daughter is deathly sick

Matthew abbreviates the story –

but tonight we will fill in the blanks

At 12 yrs old – She became a woman Jewish culture

Daddys love their daughters – Rules to date

12yrs his sunshine: 12 yrs laughter – joy

Now body is still – lips are quiet – getting cold

What we have here is a desperate father!

Jairus ruler of synagogue: Synagogue Centurion built – Jesus touched his servant

A)He is a part of that religious crowd that didn’t like Jesus

B)House where Paralytic was lowered……

His synagogue man with withered hand

C)Jairus has a lot to lose in coming to Jesus…. – but if it means saving his daughter – He doesn’t care

It is this type of desperate attitude I would love to see more of in Fathers today.

A)Desperate men willing to put away their pride and macho image – Humbly come to Jesus –

B)Desperately seeking the Lord for the well being of their families – their kids – their hearts

When Jesus hears the words of Jairus – Immediately says – lets go –

This is when our convergence takes place!

20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, "If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well."

Again Matthew abbreviates – but we learn here and from other gospels –

12 yrs – Uncontrollable Vaginal bleeding

Spent all try to find care { No use

Unclean {Couldn’t be around family{ Divorced  – couldn’t worship – She like a leper lost all.

Unlike Jairus this woman had nothing to lose in coming to Jesus – already lost everything.

One thought: Touch hem – Lit Grasp

Death grip -    Break thru faith   Rd V.22

22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, "Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well." And the woman was made well from that hour.

Again Mrk & LK : tells us Jesus stopped asked who touched me? – Disciples ……..

Healing virtue: PP push – faith touches

Her hand touched hem – faith touched the heart

Mrk tells us that Jesus called her forward- she told her whole story! – Testimony

Now Picture: JairusInteruption

A)Don’t like interruptions : traffic slow / Check out check

B)Not now! Hears 12 yrs

C) Her story was meant to help his faith!

Jesus called this woman - Daughter:

A)That’s an important word.

B)That’s the only time Jesus in the gospels calls any woman by this word.

C)It’s a term of endearment…. The word Jairus would have used of his 12 year old daughter.

By using that term Jesus owns her as his daughter.

But I’m sure Jairus is thinking to himself,

“Oh great SHE’S your daughter now.

What about MY daughter? She’s at home dying.

Can’t you just forget this daughter and get to my daughter?

But Jesus knew what he was doing and He knew what was coming!

Jesus took the time to Validate this woman’s faith and healing so everyone would know she was made whole and – He knew Jairus needed to here her story

Mrk & LK tell us at this point Jesus turned to continue the Journey to the home of Jairus

A)Met by servants – “Don’t trouble your daughter is dead!” Wow !

B)Jesus – looks Jairus sq in the eyes – Don’t be afraid only believe she will be made well!

C)Jairus believed – I am convinced hearing this woman’s story – increased his faith –

D)That was the purpose of the Convergence – two lives converging at the person of Jesus

Can I encourage you read Biographies – seeing how God moved in a another person’s life – is meant to build your faith

A)Love reading DL Moody Passion for souls

Shoe store clerk – great evangelist

B)Not real literate – always teased – count mistakes

1)”I am using all the English I know to tell …. Jesus

What are you doing with yours.

Evan Roberts – Young man coal mines preaching to the miners – Revival broke out – Welsh Revival

Alexander McClaren – He shy – yet Pastor of many

Jesus Freak I & II

Martyrs – Bible / Paul Barnabas – Apostles

Early Church History – Justin Martyr – Polycarp

Ignatius – John Wycliff

Modern day: Rosa 14 Cuba – parents disowned

Fanscisco – 22 Peru – I want to preach to the Senderist Terroist – Embassy bombing – he was walking by – arrested – Prison 500 Senderist terriost

You can have a convergence in the pages of a book like that – walk away faith like Jairus strengthened

Our own Convergences – Share our stories

A)What is God doing in your life right now – what is he teaching you –

B)What prayers has he answered – Ask each other that

C)Our faith has to be more than simply – book stuff!

Real walking with Jesus: Ask each other that question

Go serve and share

Share Struggles – College group

Pastors are not perfect -

Her story Built up the faith of Jairus

Matt 9:23-26

23 When Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing,{ Professional mourners

24 He said to them, "Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping."

And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, implies force   He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went out into all that land.
