Matt & Luke go into more detail

B) Jesus was Tempted – All experience Temptation

C) Bigger temptations – more Dangerous temptations

Look at the Temptation of Jesus – what can we learn

When / Where / What are lessons / Why

1st When Jesus was tempted – After his Baptism –

Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.

A) After a Moment of Victory – Spirit descended

Father declared – HIGH MOMENT

B) Good to note – High times in our lives are often followed by HARD TIMES

1) Triumphant times by troubling times

C) Retreat – Great times of worship / Witnessing

1) In those times we are Vulnerable to drop guard

Been said that an Area of Strength can be  a double weakness

A) 1 Cor 10:12 To him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall

B) Satan often attacks after times of Victory because we are Vulnerable to RELAX- drop Guard

2nd Where was Jesus tempted – Wilderness

3rd What can we learn – what lessons

Matt tells us 3 areas tempted

#1 Turn stones to Bread – Temptation to act Independently of His Father

A) Doubt the fathers Provision:

B) Satan does this all the time – Example single you want to get married or meaningful relationship

1) Turn stones to Bread – On line dating service

C) Need to help God out

When did God Bring Eve to Adam ? Rest

A) Denise – 1st time in a long time not looking

B) Eliezer brought Rebekah to Isaac

1) Picture of the HS working  in our lives

C) Rest in the Lord – not STRIVE

Satan says – Sex before marriage – TEST DRIVE

So Satan says turn the stones to Bread –

A) Jesus responds – Matt 4:4 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"

B)  Live by God’s Word – Man shall Live

By God’s word -

C) Live according to God’s word – Life in that

Temptation #2 – Tempt God – Throw yourself off the Pinnacle –

Temptation to tempt God rather than trust God

                     DOUBT PROTECTION

Matt 4:7 7 Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'"

Not tempt God – Trust God – He knows best

1 Cor 10:13

13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

Not tempted beyond what you are able – Escape

A) Single – Tempted w/ Lust – Don’t go alone

B) Tempt God would be – God said not allow me to be tempted beyond what able – so cruise over to my girlfriends – parents not home – TROUBLE ‘

C) Ignoring the way of Escape

D) Alcohol – Party or Bar –   2 Tim 2:22

Trust God – Living according to His word – Not put God to foolish test

Temptation#3 – Bow Down – Doubt God’s Providence & Plan

A) Take a Short cut – want world – don’t have to die

Sacrifice eternal glory for temporary Pleasure

B) Matt 4:10

10 Then Jesus said to him,  "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'"

C) Jesus was declaring – Getting to the goal is not the main objective – but getting there God’s way

1) His time / His will / His way

D) God’s Way: Jesus redeem

Worship God –Him only –

A) Worship speaks of  Surrender – hands in worship

B) Speaks of Submission – You reign

C) Speaks of Love – Motivation for service

So there we see the Basic lessons of the temptation

A) Teach us – Don’t settle for temporal instead of eternal reward

B) Don’t tempt God trust God –

C) Don’t act independently of God taking matters into your own hands –

1) But Live according to his word

4th thing Consider – Why was Jesus tempted –

Heb 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

A) REASON #1  So You could know he has been there !!!

B) You have a High priest who can sympathize with you – tempted in all points ……. Sin

C) He has been in your shoes – He understands

1) Difference that makes – Pastor Rob you just don’t understand – Abuse – right I don’t – he was

D) Rejected & betrayed by those he trusted - ridiculed

1) Outcast

E) Doubt God / act independently of God

Tempt God –

JESUS HAS BEEN THERE – walked in your sandals

REASON #2 – To teach us - Because he was victorious – we can be Victorious

A) Same way : God’s Spirit in us

Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

Fight not for Victory but From Victory

His Word in our hearts on our minds

Ps 119:11 Your word I have hidden in my heart,

That I might not sin against You.

NKJV

How does this work Practically – couple of Example and we are done

A) Tempted Pride : James 4:6 God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble."

B) Exalt yourself – Humbled – Humbled Exalted

C)  My Singing – Shower – I can sing

1) That Sunday carnal sin -  Eddie

C) All these compliments – I can sing – worship team

D) Thursday: Can’t sing

Rom 12:3

For I say, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think,

Temptation: Bitterness –

A) Heb 12:15 Beware of roots of bitterness where by many become defiled

Temptation: Lust

1 Cor 6:18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body

Prov 6:25-28

25 Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,

Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.

26 For by means of a harlot

A man is reduced to a crust of bread;

And an adulteress will prey upon his precious life.

27 Can a man take fire to his bosom,

And his clothes not be burned?

28 Can one walk on hot coals,

And his feet not be seared?

NKJV

2 Tim 2:21-22

.22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart
