Luke 7: 17-35 " The Dungeon of Doubt "
Intro: Doubt is something that all of us struggle w/ from time to time in our Christian walks
Today we find John the Baptist in that type of a situation. In the dungeon of Doubt - Doubting God’s word / CARE/ PROVISION/ V.17-20
17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.
18 Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.
19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?"
20 When the men had come to Him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, 'Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?'"
So we read in v. 17 that the report about Jesus was going out thru all Judea & to the surrounding region.
After all the excitement wears off
B) Amazing!!! This is John - the forerunner / John the great herald of the
King - John the one sent to prepare way of the Messiah
1) John who Said : Lk. 3:16,17
"I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.17 "His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire."
John who said : I must decrease & He must increase
John who said at the Baptism of Jesus Behold the Lamb of God who takes
SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? WHY IS JOHN DOUBTING ?
Like the disciples and so many others who were w/ Jesus John’s doubt is the result of misunderstanding Jesus’ ministry
John knew well the Prophesies concerning Messiah/ Like Mal. 3
-And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming," Says the LORD of hosts.
2 "But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire And like launderer's soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi,
Jon condemned Herod for living w/ his brothers wife!
John Preached the Kingdom is at hand and didn’t Isa. Declare
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever.
SO JOHN WAS PROBABLY THINKING - WHEN IS THIS KINGDOM GOING TO COME - Get me out of here & get this show on the road.
But what JOHN MISSED LIKE SO MANY OTHERS - 2 COMINGS
18 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD."
1) but it was to cleanse spiritually
were captives to sin - in the Prison of addiction - set them totally free!!!
1) John 3: 17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to
condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
E) Not saved today you can be - receive Jesus !!!!!!
Jesus is coming again - He will set up His kingdom - He is going to Judge
But like so many others John was focused on the Judgement - kingdom side of Jesus’ ministry - wondering - when are we going to see it !
This is something we can experience in our lives personally when we focus on at what the Lord is not doing - instead of what He is doing
& how He is working !
OH WE HAVE TO BE SO CAREFUL - So much in our lives is a matter of PERSEPECTIVE - Do we view the cup ½ full or ½ empty
faith puts God between us and our circumstances.
ONE SEES ONLY THE SITUATION / THE OTHER SEES THE HAND OF THE LORD IN THE SITUATION!!! ( back to our story)
So John is in that place of being discouraged by what Jesus isn’t doing / because he is still in prison / sends his disciples / notice Jesus’ response
V.21 And that very hour- ( THE SAME TIME JOHN’S DISCIPLES WERE THERE - JESUS - GOES TO WORK - as if to say watch this
21 And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits;& to many blind He gave sight.
22 Jesus answered and said to them "Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 "And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me."A)Note this
Jesus doesn’t give them this big theological distortion - He justsays go tell John what you have seen Deaf/ Blind/ dead/ lame / Gospel is
here that is so awesome
see/ who brings the dead to life / brings goodnews to the poor !
in times of war !
I think of Hagar who when fleeing from Sarah - the Lord meets her & gives her a prophecy concerning her son Ishmael
I think of Paul who was in a prison cell in Acts 18 in Corinth - we get an indication that fear has filled his heart !
Jailed/ Thessolonica; & Berea chased out of town. / Athens mocked
1) probably thinking here we go again!
Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
And the Lord seeks to work in our lives in much the same way
So Jesus response go tell John what seen & heard & as John’s disciples leave & Jesus turns to the crowd to talk about John.
24 When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
25 "But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings' courts.
26 "But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27 "This is he of whom it is written: 'Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.'
28 "For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist;
Now this blesses me & I think it is a good reminder to us of the Lord’s heart
Notice what Jesus says about John of all the prophets John was the greatest !!!! Radical
coming of the Messiah - But John actually got to present Him!!!!!
But notice what else Jesus says in v. 28 but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." Least in Kingdom greater than John.
29 And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.
John because they believed that John was a prophet sent from God
1) He was POPULAR because he dared to speak up to Herod
Mark 11: describes a time when these leaders came to Jesus & questioned Him concerning the authority by which he did things
28 And they said to Him, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?"
29 But Jesus answered and said to them, "I also will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things:
30 "The baptism of John; was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me."
31 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?' 32 "But if we say, 'From men' "; they feared the people, for all counted John to have been a prophet indeed.
33 So they answered and said to Jesus, "We do not know." And Jesus answered and said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
So these guys were irritated by the words of Jesus because they rejected John - but they also rejected Jesus
/ So Jesus continues31 And the Lord said, "To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 "They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: 'We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not weep.' 33 "For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' 34 "The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'
35 "But wisdom is justified ( proved right ) by all her children."
Now Check this out insight into the culture of the day kids in Jesus’ day were a lot like kids play in our day
Well in Jesus’ day -The kids played wedding & funeral -
1) What do you want !!! You don’t know - but understand this
WISDOM IS JUSTIFIED
( proved right ) BY ALL HER CHILDRENPaul says He uses the foolish things to confound the wise !
Marriages that were on the brink of divorce /
WISDOM IS JUSTIFIED BY HER CHILDREN - WISDOM IS PROVED IN CHANGED LIVES !!!!! Transformation of People
If you had seen Arthur when he stepped off the bus in Kingston, Ontario, you would never have been able to guess his past. He would blend into the background and be just like any traveling salesman, or perhaps a grandfather coming to visit his family. However, Arthur's vital statistics were anything but average. He was released from prison at the age of 53, yet he had spent 42 years behind bars.
He began his prison career at the age of 11. No prison seemed capable of holding him; no prison system seemed capable of breaking his spirit or reforming his behavior. He served 24 of those years in solitary confinement. Seventeen months he sat on death row. He participated in prison riots, broke a guard's arm, another guard's collar bone, and brought about the death of one sheriff. In one prison in Indiana, he stole 40 pounds of cyanide while working in the prison with the idea of poisoning the entire prison staff. He spent 31 months in Devil's Island Prison confined in a 5 x 7 foot cell, chained by his neck. Society had no hope for him, they just tried their best to confine him.
But something happened in Arthur's life to dramatically change all of that. It began one day in Leavenworth, Kansas, while in prison. A preacher came to visit in the prison and brought along his 14-year-old son, Timmy. As Timmy followed his dad down the row of cells, he for some reason paused by Arthur's cell, and smiled and winked.
That's all it took. Arthur responded, called him back to the cell and began to verbally abuse him; to curse, to swear, to call him everything he could think of. The boy broke down in tears, but he stood his ground. Finally he simply said these words to Arthur, "I love you."
Arthur said later, "That was the first time in all of my life anyone had ever told me that."
Arthur began to receive letters from Timmy. Timmy would write to him and share his concern. Timmy prayed for him. For seven years those letters kept coming, and correspondence began to be exchanged between them; until Arthur finally broke down and he said, "Every letter was stained with his tears. I couldn't take it anymore. I got on my knees and came to the Lord."
God did two miracles in the life of Arthur. The first was to transform a hate-filled, violent man into a man of love and grace with the ability to care for others. Then God did a double miracle, because He saw fit to have him released from prison in spite of that kind of a background and record. Though he had cancer, he set about proclaiming Christ with the years that he had left.
