Luke 7. 36-50 Forgiveness & Rest
The scene that we are looking at today takes place in a Home / Scene contains 3 main Characters / HOST / INVITED GUEST / INTRUDER
every time they are seen as being Hostile toward Jesus !
e) if you practice what they preach you are right on/ but if you don’t
you are wrong & in sin according to their standards
F) We need to be oh so careful that we don’t walk in a pharisaical attitude / because the truth is NONE OF US HAVE ARRIVED
SO THE HOST IS SIMON THE PHARISEE
II.
THE INVITED GUEST IS JESUS / God in the flesh !!!!!What would you do today if Jesus were coming to your house for dinner?
What would you serve ?
1)You would cook the biggest steaks / make your best desert - because
THIS IS JESUS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT
1) We would want everything to be just right
Now I DON’T THINK SIMON DID ANY OF THOSE THINGS - Instead he treats Jesus w/ great disrespect ( EXPLAIN )
you would do to a guest - which acknowledged - friends - welcome
1) Then you would take a little bit of incense & sprinkle it on their head
people in that day and in that culture was a very important experience
1) Because as you drank from the same cup and ate of the same bread
you became a part of each other.
1) He was actually becoming a part of them -
sinful people!!
NOTE: Jesus is STILL interested in DINING with men/ Rev. 3:20
"Behold I stand at the door and knock, if any man hear My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me!!"
A) Jesus is saying: "Look!! I want to have fellowship with you..... I want to become one with you...... All you have to do is open the door of your heart to Me and we can have this CLOSE and INTIMATE fellowship together!!"
1) Word dwell = inhabit - Lit. make your heart His Home
LISTEN JESUS IS A GENTLEMEN - He stands at the door knocking - he isn’t going to break it down . He is Not going to invade your life !!!!!
But He wants to dwell in your heart - wants to bless you life - wants to make your heart his home !
Jesus only goes where He is invited
c) DO we invite Jesus into all the places of our hearts or just certain rooms
Let the Word of Christ be at home in you - access every part
1) INTRUDER ENTERS THE SCENE
IV. THE INTRUDER
A)Understand houses in those days were surrounded by a courtyard or they
had a nice courtyard - type of thing .
following Him & interested in what He had to say
when all of a sudden this woman comes in to the scene
37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner,( That is a way of saying - she was a Harlot ) when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.
Then she anointed His feet w/ oil!
QUESTION - WHAT IGNITED THIS REACTION WHAT MOTIVATED HER INVADING - THIS PLACE WHERE NOT WELCOME.
28 "Come to Me, all you who weary and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.".
"In 1930 an unusual event took place. It still represents an open case in the FBI missing-person files. On August 15, after dining out with his family, a New York State Supreme Court Justice named Joseph Carter hailed a taxi and was never seen or heard from again. The FBI thought the disappearance might be work-related as the judge had heard many mob cases. But there was no real evidence to support that theory.
All investigations led to dead-ends. The only clue was a note he left for his wife and family. It said, "I am very, very tired. Love, Joe." That was it. That was the last anyone ever heard from him.
"I think many of us, have felt that way before or perhaps you "feel that way today.
But Jesus has something to say to the person who is exhausted, to the person who is worn out, chewed up and spit out by life. He offers rest to those who are frustrated, hurting, and tired."
An expanded translation of this same verse goes like this,
Come here to Me all of you who are growing weary to the point of exhaustion & have been loaded down w/ burdens and are bending beneath their weight. I alone will cause you to cease from your labor & take away your burdens & refresh you w/ rest.
Now this woman is in the crowd & she is being led around by the Yoke of slavery to sin / being dragged around by the world
C) I am tired of sinning & living my life bound by Sin!
Now a yoke is a harness / a connection - that joins to animals together / they would walk side by side to plow a field
1)The older stronger animal would know how to walk /where to go &
what to do / sturdy in its tracks / knowing the plan/ where to go.
Now Jesus says take my Yoke - which is easy - Lit. means well fitting - perfect fit. - His plan for your life
THAT IS WHAT JESUS OFFERS - YOKE IS EASY …..LIGHT
Note that JESUS SAYS COME TO ME - He doesn’t say do this or that - follow this code live by these rules - COME TO ME
You will find rest for your souls
so moved - that is what I want -I must see that man !!!!
WHY did she love so much? BECAUSE she was "FORGIVEN so much"!!
D)And Having been forgiven, she just wanted to be NEAR HIM!!
her!!
"The JOY and PEACE that Jesus has brought to me!!"
"The change from a life of misery and hopelessness!!"
That is what caused her to come to the house that Jesus was at!!
A) She knew that He was eating at the table of Simon, who was a Pharisee.
a member of a group that CONDEMNED and PUNISHED.
B) But Her love for Jesus was GREATER than her fear of man & she would
not be kept from "coming to Jesus" and showing her love and gratitude.
C) She was so touched by the DEPTH of His love for her That she wept and
her tears fell upon His feet
1) She wiped them off with her hair She smothered His feet with kisses
She anointed His feet with fragrant oil!!
NOTE SIMONS REACT.
39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself,/ saying, "This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner."
Jesus saw Simon’s heart - that is where the problem lied - you see Simon’s problem was blindness/ His hard pharisaical heart made him blind
B) So Jesus tells him a parable
40 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." So he said, "Teacher, say it."41 "There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42 "And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?"
43 Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him, "You have rightly judged."
RIGHT ON SIMON44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, SO HE IS LOOKING AT THE WOMAN BUT STILL TALKING TO SIMON
"Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.
45 "You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.
46 "You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.
47 "Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little."
When Simon looked at her, he saw a prostitute. But when Jesus, looked at her, He saw her as one who's past was forgiven
expressing her love and gratitude for that forgiveness and that new life
48 Then He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"
50 Then He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."
Note 2 things in these last 2 phrases - 1st Your faith has saved you !
Eph. 28 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
2nd thing to notice : Jesus says to her Go in Peace -
Lit. GO INTO PEACE.
A)Which tells us that we actually find ourselves dwelling in Peace when we
know that our sins have been forgiven.
CONCLUSION - note 3 things
1st Worship & fellowship are indicators of a reality w/ Jesus
A) Having been forgiven, she just wanted to be NEAR HIM!!
That speaks of FELLOWSHIP
B) She was so touched by the DEPTH of His love for her
with her hair She smothered His feet with kisses
2nd JESUS NOTICES NEGLECT & APPRECIATES AFFECTION
a) With Simon there was no display of affection / no love given
times...... YOU HAVE A DEBT WHICH YOU CAN NOT PAY!!
And Jesus loves YOU so much that HE PAYED IT!!
3RD NO SIN IS TOO GREAT FOR JESUS TO FORGIVE
The invitation that this woman accepted is available to you.
It is offered FREELY.......
Tears won't earn it.
Church won't earn it
"Once a very poor girl from a small town went to the big city to earn some money to support her old mother. Soon after her arrival, she realized that an attractive girl can earn more money w/ working than by honest work.
She became a Prostitute - she was a successful one because she was very beautiful.
She pleased many men and soon she had money, many jewels,
It didn’t take her long to forget about Her mother.
The Years passed by & her beauty began to fade & so did her popularity / One day she was stricken with remorse and asked herself, `I wonder how my mother is. I have neglected her completely.'
"She took the first train to her village, arriving late at night. To her amazement, she found the gate of her house wide open. She knew her mother was always careful to lock it at night.
Then she saw a light burning in the window of her mother's bedroom. A lamp burning so late? Mother usually went to bed early. Was she be sick?
"When she crossed the threshold, she heard her mother's voice: `Joan, is that you?'
"`Yes, Mother,' she replied. `But why is the gate wide open so late at night?'
"`Since you left, the gate has not been closed.'"
"`But why is the light burning so late? Why aren't you asleep?'
"`Since you left, it has never been extinguished. A loving mother's heart
has waited for you.'
"And you can be sure today that if you desire to repent from your sin & COME TO CHRIST -/ You will receive forgiveness & the gate of heaven, will be open wide to receive you."
