Luke 12.13-21 What will you be doing 100 yrs from Now
Intro: IN 1984 Ivan Bloskey – the worldly wise investor was addressing the graduating class at a particular University –
A) His opening comments contained just 3 words
B) GREED IS GOOD - GREED IS GOOD
C) RESPONE? Those university students responded w/ some light hearted
laughter – almost EMBARRASINGLY SO
D) All for – GREED IS GOOD – You see that is worldly wisdom – it
focuses on the hear & now / it has a hard time focusing on the future
You see his Philosophy landed him in PRISON./ Crooked deals
But that is how Worldly wisdom works / It focuses on the here & now & doesn’t look to or consider the future –
AA) And those who live that way make a grave error
1) Let me re- phrase the question - What are you going to be doing in
ETERNITY ? See That is the REAL QUESTION .
And the scriptures are very clear that everyone of us is going to being doing ONE OF 2 THINGS 100 YRS. FROM NOW.
B) You are going to be SUFFERING in the tormenting flames of hell.
Now Because we tend to be so here & now oriented we don’t like to think of our future in such serious & Drastic terms
Don’t really consider the future - don’t think about what doing in 100 yrs
Now w/ that thought in mind please join me in Luke 12:v.13 – where we see an incident that brings about some instruction.
c) It was the custom in that society for the oldest son to divide up the
inheritance & then he would choose last – divided evenly
come to Jesus – younger says HELP.
E) Now although the man was coming in that way – Jesus doesn’t give him a Decision – but instead says
who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?"
Why did Jesus respond in that way ? Why didn’t He give an answer to the Problem.
B) COVETOUSNESS - It was not the property or possessions that were
being JUDGED it was the PERSON .
C) These guys were having a problem w/ the COVETOUS CONDITION
OF THEIR HEARTS
1st "Take heed & beware of covetousness
WHAT IS COVETOUSNESS ? Interesting that it is a sin that Jesus said to beware of but it is something we hardly talk about
B) When is the last time you saw same one really Broken up over the sin of Covetousness /
Covetousness has been defined- as an unquenchable thirst for getting more of something we think we need in order to be truly satisfied.
AA) Wanting more of what you already have enough of !!!!!!
commandments
Ex 20:17 17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."
NOTE: It is this particular commandment that woke Paul up to the spiritual nature of the Law Romans 6 plagued him/ Attitude not an action
B) See As long as Paul interpreted the Law... As most all Pharisees did/ As pertaining only to the OUTWARD observance of it,
1) he had a sense of righteousness
C) But when he realized that the Law said: Thou shalt not covet....He
realized that the Law was addressing NOT an ACTION
1) but an ATTITUDE / HEART/ And He was guilty
Covetous comes in many different forms & involves many different things – Give you 3 Quick examples
D) The husband and or wife are out working more & more to amass more Stuff/money/ climb the corporate ladder ("for the good of the family")
LOSES that which is of real value
Been said : Most often, the thing that a person COVETS is the very thing that destroys those things that are of real value? Things that matter most
2nd –
Coveting of POSITION : King Uzziah – 2 Chronicles 26 – He was already a King – but he wasn’t satisfied – He wanted to be a priest –
1) AND EVERY TIME that I cross that line in trying to be more than I am called to be there is an eating away that takes place in my life.
3RDLY - COVETING FOR POWER - Gen. 3 I think of Eve – Satan told her that if she ate of the forbidden fruit / she would become like God.
E) They each had an allotment that should have satisfied them / but instead of being satisfied they wanted the one thing that God said they couldn’t have
So Jesus warns BEWARE OF COVETOUSNESS this is one sin you need to be careful of /
AA) 2nd Instruction/ for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses."
B) This is something that people in our SOCIETY for the most part do NOT
believe IN FACT
B) We have been led to believe by high powered advertising that a mans life DOES consist in the abundance of things that he possesses
NOT have all the things that we want to have.
C) Many people believe this: If they only had that new house...
that new boat../ car / a new wife/ Husband –
would be over/
EXAMPLE: If ANYONE could have proven that statement wrong, ( a mans life does not consist…..possesses) it would have been King Solomon
A) He amassed so much wealth, that during his reign silver was as common as the rocks (That is VERY common in Israel )
C) If you only spent $1,000 per day 2,740 years to spend 1 Billion dollars
D) You would think that Solomon would have been VERY CONTENT with that income
E) Solomon learned what many people fail to see today is that RICHES
CANNOT PURCHASE LASTING CONTENTMENT
1) Because that is not what Life consist of !!!!
Listen to what the Bible says about real profit & Contentment !!!
B) Godliness – having a right heart w/ God / and being content w/ what He
C)Watching everyone driving by me in w/ their windows rolled up / A/C on
began to complain to the Lord – I want a new car
Thank you Lord for my beat up old car
This CONTENTMENT doesn’t come from an ABUNDANCE of possessions It can only come from a right relationship with Jesus Christ
A) For that reason the Lord declares in Hebrews 13:5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
B) POSSESSIONS ARE FINE AS LONG AS DON’T POSSESS YOU
great men & women seek to be-"
Jesus Proceeds to illustrate this by telling a parable about a man who was self absorbed/– notice the 11 personal pronouns in passage
16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.
17 "And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?'
18 "So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.
19 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."'
20 "But God said to him, 'Fool! Always know you’re in trouble God says FOOL - This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?'
Here we see an example of the self made man – by today’s standards he probably would have been a multi millionaire / he was set for life.
Some would be prone to say
Two brothers were discussing their life goals after Sunday school. The first brother's goal was to be rich and famous. The second brother's goal was to follow Christ to the fullest.
The second brother went on to reach his goal. His name was David Livingstone, the renowned medical missionary and explorer of Africa. The first went on to be rich, but his fame came from another. The epitaph on his tombstone reads: "Here lies the brother of David Livingstone."
B) Nor did his brothers spiritual RICHNESS benefit him in the Kingdom.
1) Rich on Earth / But not Rich in Heaven!!!!
Now What does it mean to be "rich toward God"? 3 things done
B) When that takes place – You become an inheritor of great blessings
Paul put it this way in Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
2ND It is also having a Wealth of Qualities that are divine / the fruit of the H.S. is ABOUNDING OUT OF YOUR LIFE !!!!!!!
3RD it is also living for the Kingdom - Jesus said don’t store up treasures here where moth & rust destroy ….. steal …..Heaven
True story of a Sailor who was shipwrecked in the 1880’s down in the South Pacific . he was taken in by some islanders & was amazed when they hoisted him up on their shoulders & had this grand procession making him King.
As time went on he discovered that these Islanders had a tradition which said that after a year the King was to be Banished to a Deserted Island where he would starve to death & Die.
GUESS WHAT HE DID – He ordered that a massive building project was to begin on that Deserted Island – Built huge home / store rooms food to last 100 yrs / running water/ Recreational area.
So that when the day came for him to be banished to that Island he lived a life of Luxury . He was smart He used his position & wealth that he had to prepare for the Future – to prepare for what was coming.
Been Said - Can’t take it w/ you but you can send it ahead.
Wisest person in this room is the person who says I am not into building bigger barns – I am into being Rich toward God .
Which Brings me back to my original question . What you going to be doing 100 yrs. From now / What are you going to be doing in Eternity?
But God knows that we can increase our Capacity in Heaven – by investing in the Kingdom right now -
A) by being about the Business of the Kingdom!!!!
