Luke 19:28-48 The KING ARRIVES –DON’T MISS IT

Intro: In Ancient times the coronation of a monarch was quite a happening

  1. It involved a great display of splendor and pageantry!!! The king would be dressed in the most expensive robes and jewels
  2. He would be driven through his capital city in an ornate carriage drawn by stately horses.
  3. 1)Accompanying him would be his those of Royalty & foreign dignitaries,

& following that would be a large regime of the nation’s finest soldiers.

  4. Musicians would play & sing, and the crowds would break into spontaneous choruses of praise to their sovereign.
  1. Every part of the ceremony was designed to highlight the majesty, glory, power, and dignity of the king.

The passage Before us today portrays the most significant coronation the world has yet seen, THE DAY JESUS CAME RIDING INTO JER.

  1. But it was a coronation marked in contrast to the kind just described
  2. there was no pomp, no splendor, no Elaborate sort of pageantry.

  3. It was a Simple yet effective / entry – often call the TRIUMPHAL ENTRY OF JESUS CHRIST !!!!
    1. This section of Luke 19 Divides neatly into 4 sections
  1. 1)V. 28-34 How Jesus orchestrated His TRIUMPHAL ENTRY
  2. 2)V. 35-40 THE EVENT ITSELF & THE REACTIONS
  3. 3)V.41-44 JESUS WEEPS & WHY

4)V.45-48 JESUS CLEANSES THE TEMPLE

1ST WE WANT TO LOOK AT HOW JESUS ORCHESTRATED THIS EVENT & WHY – V. 28-34

  1. Now this is the only time in the Public ministry of Jesus where He is seen Orchestrating & Accepting a public display of affection
  2. In every other instance – Jesus would always seek to leave when the CROWDS would start to proclaim His Praises
  1. When Crowds would seek to make Him / their King !!!
  1. But here we see that He Orchestrated the whole thing !!!!

He picked the time – Beg. Of the Passover week

He picked the Place – Eastern Gate leading into the City

He picked the means – He would ride in on a colt of a Donkey – a donkey that had never been ridden

The Question that we must first consider is why? Why did He set this all up ? 2 Reasons / 1st is He did this to fulfill Prophecy

A) Zech. 9:9 "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.

B)This Prophecy WAS given by the Prophet Zech. over 550 yrs before this

event

    1. There He Prophesied of HOW the Messiah would ride into the city of Jerusalem Declaring Himself to be their King !!!

C)Note : Behold Your King is coming to you – but He comes Lowly riding

on a donkey

D) The Roman Soldiers observing this Scene must have been Laughing

E)The Romans were experts at parades & official public events. We call this

event "the Triumphal Entry," but no Roman would have used that term.

An official "Roman Triumph" was indeed something to behold!

  1. A Roman general had to kill at least 5,000 enemy soldiers to merit a Triumph;
  1. When a Roman general came back to Rome after a complete conquest of an enemy,
  1. He would ride into the city on the back of a GREAT WHITE STALLION
  1. In tow behind him would be His Trophies /the cities captured King & Soldiers Jewels he collected displayed .
  1. And behind them would be his own Army !!! he was welcomed home with an elaborate & official parade.
  1. Our Lord’s "triumphal entry" was nothing like that, but it was a triumph just the same.
  1. He was God’s anointed King and Savior, but His conquest would be spiritual and not military.
  1. It is interesting that a few weeks, from this event the Gospel would "conquer" some 5,000 Jews and transform their lives (Acts 4:4).

So Jesus set this up to Fulfill the Prophecy of Zech. 9:9 / but also to fulfill a Prophecy in Daniel Ch. 9 – Amazing Prophecy

  1. V.24 "70 weeks are determined For your people & for your holy city,
  2. 1st notice Who is this addressed to - Jews ( your people ) Israel
  3. and ( your holy city )== Jerusalem

  4. 2nd note that 70 weeks are DETERMINED / Now a week can = 7 days or a period of 7 yrs.
  5. 1) Gen.29 :27 Laban to Jacob fulfill her week = 7yrs

  6. Here in Dan a week refers to a 7yr. Period /70wks =70 7yr. periods

or a total of 490yrs are determined for Israel ( that is the focus Israel )

C) So What is going to take place in those 490yrs ? v. 24

  1. To finish the transgression, 2) To make an end of sins, 3)To make reconciliation for iniquity, 4)To bring in everlasting righteousness,
  1. To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy.

D) That is what the Lord is going to be doing during this time !

V.25 Know therefore & understand / not to be a MYSTERY

A) So What are we to know & UNDERSTAND

V.25b From the going forth of the command to go & restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah ....comes shall be 7 wks and 62 wks / The street shall be built again, and the wall, Even in troublesome times.

1st Realize the command is to go & rebuild the city ( Made by King

Artxeres on Mar. 14 445 B.C. Neh. Ch. 2 Important date

A) Other decrees were given previously to go & rebuild the

temple - but the emphasis here is the city

B) The streets & the wall what did Neh. do ? Troublesome times

C) So from that decree there will be 7 Wks/ really 7 7yr periods or

49 yrs/ 52days wall / 49yrs city / and 62wks or 62 7 yr periods = 434 yrs

    1. Total = 49 + 434 = 483yrs or 69 7yr periods – 483yrs

  1. Now When these 483 yrs are completed an amazing & long awaited event is going to take place / the Messiah is going to show up !
    1. So as soon as that decree is given start the stop watch start counting

So. On March 14 445 B.C. King Art. Gives the decree / Go rebuild the city & its walls

  1. At that moment the stop watch starts ticking ! tick tick tick tick
  2. Keep in mind that "prophetic years" in the Bible are not 365 days, but 360 days long. Lunar Calendar
  1. So if you count from March 14 445 B.C. using a 360 day Calendar & you count 483 yrs = 173,880 days – April 6 A.D. 32
  1. That is the very day we are reading about here – The day that Jesus rode into the city of Jerusalem / thus fulfilling the Prophecies of Zech & Dan
  1. This is such an amazing Prophecy / MAGNIFIES Bibles accuracy !!!!

But Notice V.26 "And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;

  1. So after the 62 weeks / remember the 1st 7 is gone / it is included so

after 483 yrs Messiah comes / and is cut off but not for Himself

    1. And at the end of that week Messiah is cut off /
  1. What was going to happen at the end of this week - Crucifixion

Jesus would be cut off – but not for Himself

C) So the 1st 69 wks / 483 yrs of Dan. Prophecy was fulfilled in

King Art. decree city rebuilt / & Triumphal entry & Crucifixion

D) Then we are told something else is going to happen

And the people of the prince who is to come(The Prince who is to Come refers to the antichrist – told in Dan 2 & Dan. 7 that he will come out of the Revived Roman Empire –

E)So his People would be the Romans & here we are told what they will do Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.TEMPLE - The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.

A)When did this happen ? Titus in A.D. 70/ 37 ½ yrs after Christ Death

B) Destroyed city / ordered to leave the TEMPLE standing / but in

the fire gold melting .....greed / tore it down!

70 weeks are determined for your people ..........city

C) Quest. what happened to Dan . 70 week ? Where did it go ?

Answer is in v. 27

27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate."

V.27 Then he - the prince = antichrist

A) Makes a Covenant. w/ many / Israel for one week or one 7 yr. period

After the RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH

B)But in the middle of that Covenant. ( middle of the Week) – he will break the Covenant. By going into the Temple & declaring God / demanding Worshipped

So we see that this event brought about the fulfillment of the Prophecies found in Zech. 9:9/ Concerning How He would come – Lowly donkey

  1. And Also Dan. 9 When He would come – 173,880 days from the day that King Artexerxes gave the Decree Go rebuild city & wall
  2. Now The second reason for this demonstration was to force the Jewish religious leaders to act.
  1. See They had hoped to arrest Him after the Passover (Matt. 26:3-5) but God had ordained that His Son be slain on Passover
  1. That He would be the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of world"
  2. Interesting to note that Every previous attempt to arrest Jesus had failed because "His hour had not yet come"

1) But now was the Time – these events pushed the envelope so to speak / the Religious leaders needed to act

Now Lets consider the actual event & note the REACTIONS that took place Read v. 35-40

  1. When welcoming a king, it was customary for people to lay their outer garments on the road, and then add festal branches (2 Kings 9:13).

B) Matt. (21:9 ) and Mrk (11:9) both tell us that the people were crying out HOSANNA= Save Now!!

  1. comes from Psalm 118:25-26 / MESSIANIC PSALM
  1. Jesus knew that the people were quoting from a Messianic psalm (relate but He allowed them to go right ahead and shout.
  1. He was openly affirming His kingship as the Son of David.

The section of the Psalms that they were referring to begins with the words

Psa 118:22-23 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

A) This is obviously a prophecy concerning Jesus Christ.... The BUILDERS being the religious leaders of Israel who REFUSED Jesus

B) The next portion of the Psalm declares

Psa 118:24 This is the day which the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

A) This passage is so often misused- You wake up in the morning & the sun is shining and you say: "Oh, this is the day that the Lord has made".

1)In a sense, that is right, but it is NOT what this passage is speaking about

B) NOTE: The Psalmist is talking about ONE SPECIAL DAY in all of history when God would fulfill His promise of sending a Savior

C) A Specific day would come when God would bring salvation to lost man

So first we see the Reaction of the Crowd / but As the crowd broke out with these shouts, the Pharisees, reaction was quite a bit Different

  1. Recognizing that they were quoting a Psalm of the Messiah, they ordered Jesus to rebuke His disciples/ tell them to stop / Love His Reaction
  2. 40 But He answered and said to them, "I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out."

  3. Wouldn’t that have been something!!! – Ultimate – ROCK CONCERT - Stones singing

  1. If the People don’t CRY OUT THE ROCKS WILL !!!

  1. Interesting that there has been Research done – documenting how Plants Responds to Speech & to Touch

1) The Bible declares in Psa. 19:1,2 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.

  1. Day unto day utters speech,

Pastor Chuck tells of an interesting Story about being invited to the office of a friend who owned a Polygraph firm

  1. The man had the Polygraph hooked up to a plant –

And so as he hooked up the electrodes to the plants, and the needles started just moving up and down as it was measuring the responses within the leaf, then he started talking to the plant - he said, "Now move the needle in an upward position on the graph." And as he commanded it to do so, the needle started moving upward. And he said, "Now show us the downward movement." And the needle moved down on the graph. And then he said, "Now show us some violent motion," and the needle began to swing all the way across.

A Girl came in and pinched a leaf on the plant that wasn’t hooked up to an Electrode – the needle started moving violently - / she left calmed down

But the moment that she entered back into the room the plant seemed to sense her presence because the needle started reacting violently up/ down

  1. And there were several other – experiments done that resulted in the same kind of reaction .
  2. Not sure what it means but it is interesting – Seems to indicate that – God has created His creations w/ ability to respond

  1. Paul said that Creation is groaning – longing for the day of Redemption when they can break forth into Praise !!!!

  1. Man is the only part of creation that is REBELLIOUS when it comes to Worship !!!!

  1. The Rocks are ready to Cry out / the Trees Isa. Declares will Clap their hands / the Mts. will Break forth into Song !!!!

  1. But then there are People – I don’t feel like worshipping today –

All Creation is waiting to Respond - waiting for the day of Redemption / When they can Break forth into Praise !!!!

  1. And we are told Let everything that Has Breath Praise the Lord & we say No – I am too tired – don’t feel like singing – some other excuse
  2. Guys we really don’t Understand the Privilege that the Lord has given to us in giving us the Capacity to Praise Him

  1. Creation wants to & can’t at this Present time – People can but many don’t want to !!!! Sad

  1. But here is what is really interesting is that we are a Worshipping People we just Worship the wrong things Sports Stars/ Rock Stars / Movie stars

  1. Even Stoic People go nuts at a Ball Game / Touchdown / up go the hands – high fives / the Wave / Home Run we Clap / Great Play –they Dance – We copy it !!

Guys those are all expressions the Bible says that we should have toward the Lord in Worship!!!!!

Psa. 47:1 Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph!

Psa. 63: 4 Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.

Psa.134: 2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, And bless the LORD.

Psa. 149: 3 Let them praise His name with the dance; Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.

  1. For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation.

The Lord desires that we would be Expressive when it comes to Worship

  1. Rev. 4: 11 "You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created everything, and it is for your pleasure that they exist and were created."

B) In Worship we are fulfilling ONE OF THE REASONS for our Existence

3rd Notice Although people praising – Jesus is weeping !! Wept = Wail out loud !!! Why? v.41-44 NOTICE: The reasons WHY Jesus wept

  1. 1st Jesus WEPT because they were BLIND to the work that God wanted

to do among them

B) NOTE: I wonder how many times God weeps over OUR blindness

Matt.23:37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

C) IF you only knew what God wanted to do for YOU

  1. IF you only knew what God WOULD do for YOU – if you were just willing !!! If just open !!!

D) Jesus weeps today over men’s blindness & unwillingness to allow Him to work in their lives !!!!

2nd He wept because He could see ahead some 37 ½ years later

  1. City would be Destroyed the temple Demolished & the people would be dispersed !!!!!

B) So He WEPT over the CONSEQUENCES of Israel having rejected Him

C)He began to WAIL over their blindness and the fact that it would COST

them peace with God and desolation

D) NOTE: Spiritual blindness not only leads to LOSING what God would want to do in your life... It leads to devastation and destruction

4th Jesus cleanses the Temple : v. 45-48

  1. The court of the Gentiles was the only place in the temple that was available to the Gentiles.
  2. There the Jews could witness to their "pagan" neighbors and tell them about the one true and living God.
  1. But instead of being devoted to evangelism, the area was used for a "religious marketplace".
  1. The SCAMS BY THE PRIEST –
  1. where the Jews from other lands could exchange money and purchase

approved sacrifices

  1. Instead of praying for the people, the priests were preying on the people & The temple was not a "house of prayer" it was a "den of thieves"

NOTE: It ANGERED Jesus that they would make merchandise out of spiritual things.....

A)That they would take advantage of people who would be seeking the Lord

B) I am sure that He feels the same way today when He sees so-called ministries taking advantage of peoples hunger for God as a means to their own personal gain

Now the Bible declares that your Body is the Temple of the H.S.

  1. He Desires that your Body – would be a place where Praise / Worship & communion is taking place
  2. Your body would be a vessel of honor used for his Glory & honor
  1. So He seeks to Drive out – anything and everything that would keep us from fulfilling our Reason for Existence – Praise Him !!!

C) To praise Him to be a Vessel that He can & would work through !!!

  1. 1) What is in your Life – not allowing it to be His temple !!!

D)Weights & Sin – things of Dishonor - / What is Jesus wanting to remove

today ? Attitude / Habit / Sin / Rebellion - Are you Willing ?

1) Or Are you Blinded – fact of the damage that is causing ?

Heard about a Story that took place several yrs ago in Oklahoma

  1. A woman was traveling alone down an interstate HWY – stopped at one of those road side diners in the middle of no where
  2. After eating she climbed back in her car & headed off down the HWY – wasn’t far when she noticed a Semi truck coming up fast in rear view …
  3. Soon the Semi was right on her tail – she sped up & so did the Semi – soon she was going – 110mph
  1. She veered off at the next Exit – and the Semi followed her
  1. She became terrified thinking this guy was out to get her – she pulled into a gas station jumped out of her car ran in – screaming for the attendant
  2. The Driver of the Semi also pulled into the gas station & jumped out of his truck & ran to the back door of her car & opened the door
  1. He pulled out a man who was hiding on the floor – a would be rapist –who snuck into her car back at the Diner .

The Truck Driver – because he was sitting up high happened to notice the man when the lady drove by & thought he looked suspicious

  1. So he followed seeking to help this lady / he was out to save her / yet all the while she thought he was out to get her
  2. Guys that is just like our Lord – from His perspective / He starts barreling down on us –
  1. We think – Oh know He is out to get me !!!
  1. So we hit the accelerator - / he presses in harder & we run faster

D) And there is this battle going on when all the while He is out to Save me

From something that would Ultimately rape & destroy & Defile me

    1. His heart is to Save !!!!
  1. Anyone here today – hitting the Accelerator ? Trying to runaway from the Convicting work of the H.S. ?

Know this He is not out to get you but to Protect You / Save You / Rescue You !!!!!

Closing : 1Pet. 2

2:1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

In other words Get Rid of the Junk that is contaminating the temple !!!

4Coming to Him as to a living stone, Because He has RISEN He is that Living stone – why we have a Living Hope !!!

But He was rejected indeed by men, CORNER STONE – REJECTED - but chosen by God and precious,

Upon this Rock I will build my Church ….prevail – Foundation Rock

5 you also, as living stones, We are connected to Him – because He lives We live – We are Living Stones – are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.- LIVING STONES - ( NEW GROUP) ROCKS CRY OUT

6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, "Behold, I lay in Zion JERUSALEM A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame."

  1. Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are

disobedient, "The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,"8 and "A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense." They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

What is Your relationship to Christ today – Precious – Because tasted of His Grace - received His love

  1. Or is He a Stumbling Block & a Rock of offense because He cramps your style – makes you feel uncomfortable

B) have you received or rejected the Knowledge of Him !!!!
