Luke 22:1-46 Final hours & Lessons

Intro: (Luke 9:51) Jesus had "steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem" knowing full well what would happen to Him there;

  1. And now those events were about to occur. Important to understand that They were appointments, not accidents,
  1. They had been Pre-determined by the Father and written centuries before by the Prophets in the Old Testament Scriptures .

Wiersbe

We cannot but admire our Savior and love Him more as we see Him courageously enter into this time of suffering and eventual death.

B)The Passover supper in the Upper Room is the focus of our Study tonight

22:1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. 2 And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. 4 So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.

6 So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.

We have noted in Previous studies how the Religious Leaders had purposed in their hearts that they wanted to get rid of Jesus

  1. And how they were hoping to do so after the Passover

B) But God had ordained that His Son would be the Final Passover lamb

    1. That He would be Slain on Passover –

C)Here we see the Wheels – turning in Motion – Beginning w/ Judas

  1. Judas was never a true follower – told else where Thief – greedy

D) I find it interesting that He betrayed our Lord for 30 pieces of Silver – because 30 pieces of silver – price of a common slave

    1. Jesus is the SERVANT OF ALL / Only Makes Sense / Zech 11

E) Judas goes to the Religious Leaders to put the deal in motion – lead them to a quiet place – away from the crowds – whom they feared

    1. Interesting that these were to be Religious men – Who were suppose to fear God & not man/ but the opposite was true of them

Now an interesting question to ponder is where did these guys get the money to give to Judas ?

  1. During that time of Passover festival the Priest would carry money in little bags – for the purpose of purchasing lambs for the Passover

B) It is highly likely that the money given to Judas to Betray Jesus was money that was entrusted into their care for Purchasing the Passover lambs

    1. Which is really interesting because essentially that is what they did they purchased the Passover Lamb!!!!!
  1. Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. 8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat." 9 So they said to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare?" 10 And He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 "Then you shall say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"' 12 "Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready." 13 So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

Note that last phrase - So they went and found it just as He had said to them,

  1. That is such an awesome thing for us to learn – Things are just as He said
  2. Jn.15 For w/ out me you can do nothing - Just as He said /

Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles were the three most important feasts on the Jewish calendar

  1. The feast of Pentecost, or of Weeks, commemorated God’s provision at harvest time (see Ex. 23:16).
  1. It was that feast which the Jews were celebrating in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit came upon believers
  1. The feast of Tabernacles, or Booths, commemorated Israel’s wandering in the wilderness for forty years, TABERNACLED.
  1. when they lived in temporary dwellings and were dependent on God’s direct provision for food and water (see Lev. 23:33-43).

D) But in many ways the feast of Passover, which was closely associated with the feast of Unleavened Bread, was the central feast of the Jewish year

  1. These two feasts combined to make an eight-day celebration that began with the Passover.
  1. The two feast were so closely connected in the minds of Jews that the feast of Unleavened Bread was used as a comprehensive designation that included the Passover.
  2. So The two names were, used interchangeably to designate the entire eight day celebration.
  3. Technically, however, the Passover was celebrated only on the first day, the fourteenth of Nisan,
  1. and the feast of the Unleavened Bread followed from the fifteenth through the twenty-first of Nisan.

Both feasts commemorated the deliverance of Israel from Egyptian bondage.

During the feast of the Passover Jews would gather in Jerusalem from all over the world.

A) For the Jews around the world it was their dream to go to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover.

B) A man by the name of Sestius told Caesar that religion was very important to the Jews. Caesar didn't believe Sestius

1). So to prove his point Sestius took a census of how many lambs were

killed at Passover

  1. He came up with a total of 256,500 lambs that were slain for the Passover

in one year.

NOTE: It was required that a minimum of 10 people eat the Passover lamb = approx. 2.6 Million Jews that had gathered into Jerusalem for the Passover.

Elaborate preparations were made for the feast of the Passover.

A) For a whole month leading up to the feast they would study and talk about Passover in the synagogues.

B) They studied about how God delivered their ancestors from Egypt

  1. Two days before the feast there would be a thorough search of the

house to make sure that there would be no leaven in the house.

C) Leaven is like yeast. It is the stuff that makes bread rise.

  1. On the night of the original Passover, they were to eat unleavened

bread for two reasons:

D) The first was practical, the second had to do with Jesus

1st Practical They were going to prepare this meal in a hurry and wouldn't have time to make bread that would rise.

  1. They ate the lamb with unleavened bread. So the Passover meal became
  2. known as the feast of unleavened bread.

2nd Reason :No Leaven - LEAVEN is a type of SIN because just a LITTLE bit of it has the capacity to permeate a whole loaf.

    A) It SPREADS by ROTTING.

B)Even as the lamb that was slain for the Passover was to be without spot or blemish, thus being a type of Christ, being a sinless sacrifice,

C)So too the bread representing Christ would HAVE to be unleavened,

because in Him there was NO sin.

NOTE: They would make 3 round loaves of flat bread for the feast.

    A) The middle loaf was BROKEN and it was HIDDEN.

  3. During the time of the dinner the children would search through the house
  4. looking for the lost piece of broken bread.

  5. When they would find it they would bring it in to the family & they would all rejoice over finding the BROKEN and the HIDDEN piece of bread.

D) Interesting that This is a traditional part of the feast for which

the Jew has no explanation. Why THREE pieces?

1) Why the MIDDLE one BROKEN?

E)Why was the BROKEN piece HIDDEN?/ Why the REJOICING when it

was found? THEY don't know but WE do!!

The 3 pieces of bread represent the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

A) The middle piece represents the Son.

  1. At the last supper Jesus, Jesus took the MIDDLE piece and He BROKE

and said "Take and eat for this is MY body which is BROKEN for you".

14 When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, "With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 "for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." 17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves;

18 "for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." 19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

  1. So Jesus takes the Bread & the Wine – two elements that were pictures of Him & His work !!! Note several ways
  2. 1st BREAD& WINE are Easily accessible - Jesus is easily accessible – Common people drawn to Him & Heard Him Gladly
  3. 2nd Consider what is Bread – Bread is grain that is ground up & baked in the Oven !!!

  1. So too Jesus was ground up by the Religious leaders & by the sin of Humanity

  1. He was Baked in the oven – taking on the very fires of Hell for you & for me !!!

3rd What is Wine? – Crushed Grapes – The grapes have to be Crushed in order to Release their Refreshment

  1. When Jesus was Crucified – He would be crushed – Mixture of Blood & water flowed out

B) Broken Heart - Toloth worm - Births it’s young blood stain on the Branch .

In Jesus Passover or Communion – takes on a whole New Meaning :

Paul said that 3 greatest virtues are faith Hope & Love

  1. For Israel looking back – Deliverance from Egypt – Time of Remembrance
  2. Also for us/Jesus did say Often as we do it do it in Remembrance of Him –

  1. So at Communion we look Back – Remembering what He did for Us

  1. Looking back in Faith – Lord as I come to this table tonight I am remembering that You did it all – You Paid price

  1. In Faith – Leave here Cleansed because I am forgiven – Your Body Broken / Your Blood Shed /So In Faith I Remember – LOOK BACK

But Also in FAITH – LOOK W/ IN – See Jesus said that He was establishing a New Cov.

  1. Old Cov. Said Do /Do / Do / - New Says Done –
  2. In the New Cov Ezk 36 Place my Spirit w/ in You cause You to walk in my ways

  1. Give you New Heart – Change He does on Inside../ Thankful

  1. So in Communion I am in Faith – Establishing that I want to walk after the Spirit – Realize that work Was Done
  2. 1) 2 Cor. 5 Spirit as a Guarantee !!!!/ Began work complete it

  3. So Look Back in Faith / Look W/ in By Faith/ But there is also a Looking ahead in Hope

Jesus said in v.15 "With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 "for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."

  1. So in Communion my heart is filled w/ Hope that – and I am Declaring my Absolute expectation – Jesus is coming again – as He said

B) Still has that FERVENT DESIRE TO EAT W/ US !!!!

So in Communion we are also looking Ahead in Hope /

  1. So looking back in Faith – Looking W/ by faith / looking ahead in HOPE – 4THLY – LOOK – around in LOVE
  2. At the table I See clearly my brothers & sisters in Christ - / Here / other churches / see eating of the same loaf / drinking same cup – UNITY
  3. Might not sing the same songs – or believe the same about Prophecy – but we come together at Calvary

1) UNITY - At the Cross – all Sinners need of Savior

Notice what happens next –

v. 21 "But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table.22 "And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!" 23 Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

Note several things : 1st Judas is still here – every gospel account - / Key note the Passover symbolized the finished work of Christ

  1. But it has to be embraced – by faith – Ritual means nothing
  2. In fact Paul spoke of eating in an unworthy manner – 1 Cor. 11 – what mean ? Not giving worth to body of Christ – many sick / dead

  1. If not walking in the Lord better not to partake –

C) Why Jesus allow Judas – PERSONAL OPINION –Judas could have repented – FRIEND – giving him chance

Now we are told in John’s gospel that some where around this point in when Jesus washed their feet

  1. So Jesus announces one of you is the Betrayer – Note reaction/ IS IT I / -
  2. But soon after – what are they doing – CARNALITY IS SCENE Move FROM Is it I? To I IS IT !!!! I AM THE MAN !!! v.24

24 Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. Pause & Comment – So insensitive

25 And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called 'benefactors.'

26 "But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.

27 "For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.

  1. Good example of what happens to the Person Who lives in a Performance based acceptance mentality in their Christian walks
  2. A very contrasting – array of emotions – when doing Well following all the rules / Regs / Living up to Expectations

  1. The tendency to think I IS IT !!! I am the greatest – look w/ condescending view on others ( Wish they had it together as Me )

  1. But when I am failing – not living up to those expectations – to say – It is I & I am such a failure - CONDEMNATION SETS IN !!!
  2. Jesus teaches an Important Lesson – Greatest Serve / W. True greatness is to be like Jesus is being a servant to others

The world says you are great when people are serving You – But Jesus says that true greatness is when you are serving others

  1. That is the Behavior that is rewarded in Heaven ! Note v. 28-30

28 "But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials.

  1. "And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30 "that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

Apostles = Special place in the Kingdom !!!!

31 And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 "But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren." 33 But he said to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death." 34 Then He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me."

The threshing floors were large flat areas.... sometimes just rocks.

A) They would take the wheat and place it on the rocks and they would STOMP on the wheat to loosen the husks/chaff from the kernel of wheat.

B) Sometimes they would let the oxen trample over it and stomp the wheat so that they could sift the wheat.

1) Jesus is telling Peter: "Satan wants to STOMP on you."

C) NOTE: That is ALL that Satan wants to do.

  1. He will use every DEVICE possible. Some subtle, some blatant. But he

wants to STOMP you.

But Notice again what Jesus said 32 "But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren."

  1. Satan continues to want to STOMP & Jesus continues to Pray

B) Jesus KNOWS what we are made of and for that reason He is compassionate towards us in our failures.

Ps. 103:14 14 For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.

Ps. 31: 7 I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy, For You have considered my trouble; You have known my soul in adversities,

C) It is from that position that there at the last supper Jesus addressed Peter in a way as to express tenderness and compassion.

Sometimes Amanda spills something or breaks things and I forget that the reason for that is that he is just a little girl

A) The Lord NEVER forgets what we are made of.

B) It was only Because of the intercession of Jesus that Peter did not utterly fall away.

1) What a great example of what Peter would one day write:

1 Pet 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

C) That any of us are walking with Jesus today is a MIRACLE

  1. The devils power is too great and our power is so small that apart from

the power of Jesus we would NEVER make it to heaven

D) NOTE: REMEMBER We have a Friend in high places

1) He is WATCHING over us and PRAYING for us without fail.

Note : Jesus prayed that His Faith would not fail – Did Peter’s faith fail – No He Believed that Jesus was the Messiah

  1. Nor did His Love fail – He loved him / pulled out sword –
  2. What Failed – it was His FLESH – that was major problem – Peter to learn – Spirit willing flesh was weak

  1. Peter had too much Confidence in the Flesh

  1. Though all these forsake You – Not I – Die for You –Almost did Sword in the Garden !!!

35 And He said to them, "When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?" So they said, "Nothing." Referring to Luke 9 & 10 sent out in Faith

  1. They were received – good time !!!! But now things Different

36 Then He said to them, "But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 "For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: 'And He was numbered with the transgressors.' For the things concerning Me have an end."

38 So they said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough."

  1. Jesus bore the brunt of Persecution – now they would – HATED FOR HIS NAME SAKE –
  2. What do ? Be on Guard – Put up dukes
  3. Most commentators take this figurative – not literally swords / ready for battle / fight / take kingdom by force /

  1. Be Prepared –

  1. Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.

  1. Gethsemene = Olive Press – Jesus was about to be Pressed !!!

  1. When He came to the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation."

  1. One Purpose of Prayer is not just for PETITON for Protection - Powerful Posture / Some fall because of a Lack of Prayer

41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."

43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.

44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Why Cup Pass / why Agony – Reason He who knew no Sin / Perfectly Pure was about to become sin – ( Separated Father)

  1. Heavy duty Torment

B) Bible is the Story of 2 Gardens –It was In the first Garden Eden – that man lost his relationship w/ God BECAUSE OF Rebellion

  1. And it was In the 2nd garden Geth. That that relationship w/ the Father was RESTORED because of SUBMISSION

  1. In 1st Garden Eden – Adam tried to Hide from God

  1. In 2nd G. Jesus bared His soul to God

  1. In Eden – Sword was taken out & Man was driven out

  1. In Geth. A sword was put away & a man was healed

  1. In Eden a decision was made that resulted in Damnation / but in Geth. A Decision was made that Resulted in Salvation .

  1. What was that Decision ? Not my will be yours be Done

When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow.

46 Then He said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation."

  1. Note We all have our Geth. – times & Places of Pressing -
  2. Before Complain - Remember – Jesus Praying for You !!!
  3. Turn to Heb. 12

12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.

  1. Not Resisted to Blood – Jesus did

B) We are His Investment – He wants His return !

Luke 22:35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
