Luke 23:26-56 Four Men One savior
Intro: Tonight we are going to be looking at Lukes account of the 6 hrs that Jesus spent on the Cross .
Right away our attention is drawn to Simon in the Very first verse
v. 26 Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.
Now Point this out to you not just as an Historical footnote but also because it has some tremendous personal Application
B) Jesus DECLARED IN
Luke 9: 23 "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.24 "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it .
C)
The Person who lives in that way that MINDSET will find real LifeD)Because just as old
Mick Jagger sang yet to figure out You cant getNO SATISFACTION in living for Self
JOY VS YOJ
So here is Simon thinking BUMMER but in carry that cross something happened to his life
Here we see these
Woman having Sympathy on the Man of SorrowsJESUS GREAT LIBERATOR OF WOMEN Read v.28- 31
Jesus basically saying here dont feel sorry for me my agony is about to end but yours is going to be intense
32 There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death.
33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.
Now note here that the Crucifixion of Christ brought about the fulfillment of many O.T. passages SUCH AS
Psalm 41:9
9 Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me. Betrayed by a FriendZech. 11:12 12 Then I said to them, "If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain." So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter"; that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD for the potter.
Isa. 53:7 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.
SILENT BEFORE PILATE & HEROD
Isa. 53: 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
CRUCIFIED W/ TWO THIEVES
Isa.50:6 I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.
Psa. 22: 16 For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet;
Psa.22:18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.
So FULFILLMENT OF MANY SCRIPTURES written hundreds of yrs before this event & before Crucifixion even invented
35 And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God." 36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself."
Now the Mocking that takes place here is interesting because they are unknowingly Professes truth about Jesus that up to this point denied
A) They say
He saved others - they would never have admitted that hadyou asked them but they MAKE THIS STATEMENT ..
B)But It was a true Statement He did save others
You see Jesus came to Redeem the World Faced w/ a Choice Save others / or Save Himself
John 10: 18 "No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.
The death of Jesus Christ on the cross WAS NOT an inescapable series of
events that brought His ministry to an unexpected and tragic end.
It was the predetermined plan whereby God made a way for you and I to be saved from the penalty of our sins!!
E) If Jesus COULD NOT "save Himself" because there was no other way
for to meet the demands of God's justice.......
1) How will you hope to be saved without giving your heart to Jesus?
F) If Jesus WOULD NOT "save Himself" because HE loved you more than He loved Himself........
1) WHY would you want to live without His love?
Now in v.39- 43 We are introduced to 2nd man who was impacted by Christ on the Cross that day ( Looked at him on Sunday thief ) Read
Now we have noted already that it was no accident that Jesus was Crucified between two thieves /( Numbered w/ transgressors)
1.) Perhaps God wanted to give to us a sample of human nature and
the response of man to the salvation that God has made available to EVERYONE.
2.)
It is possible that God wanted one last witness that Jesus was innocent.
3.)
Perhaps God allowed Jesus to be put to death between 2 thieves to show us that salvation has nothing to do with works.A)
This man had NOTHING that he could offer to Jesus.B) There was no way he could REFORM or prove his loyalty to Jesus.
1) He had NEVR been baptized, never received communion, never gave a penny to the work of the church.
C) The words of Jesus to this man should prove once and for all that you CAN NOT be saved by works.
1) Eph. 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; .. BOAST
4.) Perhaps God allowed Jesus to die like this to show us that saving faith is a gift from God.
Eph. 2:8
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:The Story of the two Thieves is also a good illustration of how to & Not to Pray (Looked at on Sunday as Well )
hour" would be 12:00 noon.
C) Then From 12:00 noon until 3:00 in the afternoon. there was a
DARKNESS over all the earth.
D) Now This IS NOT a solar eclipse because the Passover ALWAYS takes place at the 3rd full moon after the winter solstice.
E)It is totally impossible to have a solar eclipse during a full moon because
the sun and the moons are on the opposite sides of the globe....
NOTE: This darkness recorded by Luke was a real darkness, but the darkness carried with it powerful symbolic meaning.
JN8:12, "I am the light of the World .He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of Life
John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
A) But here
the light of the world is dying on a cross.1) Man is
EXTINGUISHING the only TRUE light that lights the world.B) Why ?
John 3:17-20 17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn
the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.18 "He who
believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned
already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of
God.19 "And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the
world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were
evil.20 "For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to
the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
C) How appropriate that God
should DARKEN the earth at the time that man is extinguishing THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.D) God is giving a VISBLE illustration of the spiritual reality of rejecting Jesus Christ.
E)Really to the extent that we reject Him & His word Extent that we find
ourselves in the Dark Spiritually speaking
V45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
46And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.' " Having said this, He breathed His last.
Here is another event that transpired that is FILLED with meaning.
It was made of 72 Braids each consisting of 24 cords
Psa.24: 3 Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Here is what we need to watch out for that is that we dont sow up the Veil again
F)
Plenty of Exhortations to Shout Celebrate Exalt the LordHeb.2:12 Jesus our Worship leader "I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will SING PRAISE to You."
47 So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous Man!"
48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned.
49 But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
v.47 Introduced to our 3rd Person : CENTURION
Illustration for us What affects the World ? When they see us Suffer
V. 48-54
Here we see our 4th Individual - Joseph of Arimathea
Mark calls him a Prominent Council Member
Psa. 29:25 Tells us that the Fear of Man is a Snare
Trip you up & trap you1) A
D)
The WANNA-BE successful will be afraid of taking a stand for Jesus because he might not get the big promotion that will make him successful.E) The person who is popular might be afraid to make a stand for Jesus.
NOTE: Joseph was a man who had both wealth and position.
threatened by a public stand for Jesus.......
B) ESPECIALLY when it appears that Jesus was not well received by those with great wealth.
C) It could be that he felt that
his position would be compromised by a public stand for Jesus.....1) ESPECIALLY because his position was that of being one of the group that eventually condemned Jesus to death.
During that period of Joseph's life, he WAS NOT gaining anything by not standing up for Jesus.
A) He was LOSING!!
There is another fact we need to know about The FEAR OF MAN.
A)
The FEAR OF MAN is related to how much, or how little a person knows the Lord.Ps. 56:11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do to me.
Ps. 27:1;3 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
Dan. 11:32 the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
In light of this, there is a way in which Joseph serves as an example to us for the good.
of man.
B) LUKE tells us that at Joseph did make a stand for Jesus at the house of the high priest. Luke 23:
C)NOTE: It appears that the testimony of Jesus before the counsel
CONVINCED Joseph of Arimathea that Jesus was the Messiah.
D) Then his FAITH GREW as he beheld the CROSS!!
John 19:38
And after this Joseph of Arimathea...... besought Pilate that he might take awayThe cross of Jesus Christ has the power to change cowards into lions.
WHY? For there man comes to KNOW the love of God for him!!
A) There man sees sin for what it really is....... The horrible consequences of sin....... The unflinching judgement of God against it.
B) There man sees the price God paid for sin - The Son of God nailed to a cross.
C)Joseph beheld the cross of Jesus - He heard Jesus say:
"Father forgiveD)He heard Jesus cry in agony when sin separated Jesus from the Father.....He heard the words of victory: "It is finished".....
1) He saw Jesus bow His head at the last and dismiss His spirit.
NOTE: As Joseph beheld the cross of Jesus he threw any and all fear of man to the wind.
He would not only go and ask for the body but he would take Jesus down from the cross and place Him into his own tomb.
A) Fulfilling Prophecy of Isa.53:9 Grave w/ the Rich
B) In doing so he was telling the world that he once feared that Jesus IS right and everyone else is wrong!!
C) The cross COMPELLED Joseph to side with Jesus.
1) The cross COMPELLED Joseph to do ANYTHING for Jesus, no matter how he would look before man.
QUOTE SPURGEON:
"The cross of Jesus was like a powerful magnet" that drew Joseph to identify himself with the crucified One.D)
TRUE If you have true faith in Jesus, the cross will finally have that effect upon you.influence over real faith.
Today Jesus Christ is not hanging on a cross needing to be buried.
A) But the time that we live in demands that every follower of Jesus step forward and acknowledge Jesus as His Lord and serve Him.
B) EXAMPLE: THE BUOY OFF OF SOUTH WALES WITH A BELL ON IT.
C)
D) APPLICATION: We live in
stormy times and it time for the true believers to ring out!!enemies of Jesus had gone too far.
Paganism today has GONE TO FAR
Mordecai w/ Esther
Esther 4:14,16 Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"
so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!"
