Suffering Servant Series, Part 5

Isaiah 53:10-12

The Servant Satisfied

We have come to the last Stanza in the message of God’s suffering Servant.

A) Called the MT Everest of the OT

B) Also called the Symphony of the Saved.

C) Tonight we come to the end – Amazing passage that depicts a great satisfaction on the Part of God the father – over the suffering of the son.

D) There is a sense of completion mentioned here

On the part of God the Father

Once again let’s begin in Ch. 52:13 – read the whole account because V.10 brings us full circle.

Notice v. 10 again -

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;

He has put Him to grief.

Verse after verse depicting the suffering that Jesus would endure for sinners – One horrified blow ….

A) Interrupted by this statement – It pleased the Lord to bruise Him – Crush Him.

B) As a Parent God the Father loved His son way more than any of us have ever loved a child.

1) This doesn’t seem possible.

C) God the son is on the cross – sin of the world flowing from all generations

1) Flowing from unborn generations

D) He is bearing the weight of all of that sin –

1) It pleased the Father to Crush Him to Bruise Him

Pour out His wrath upon His Son.

We have all heard the Story of the Draw Bridge operator – takes his son to work w/ him one day.

A) When He is not looking son wanders out gets stuck in the gears of Draw Bridge.

B) Dad notices his son is stuck – But he also notices that a passenger train is coming –

1) Dilemma: He needs to lower the draw bridge or 300 vacationers on the train are going to die

C) But if He lowers the drawbridge – he knows the gears are going to crush his young son.

1) But to save the vacationers – He does the right thing and sacrifices his son. {Good story/ pp train oblivious

D) Courson: Changed the story: Train is full of not vacationers but – Convicts headed to the worst prison possible – for the rest of their lives

E) Would you save them? – He does –

F) Touching illustration that depicts a father’s willingness to sacrifice His son to save others

But the story is not an accurate depiction of what really happened on Calvary that day.

A) First Jesus wasn’t a trapped little boy who accidently found himself in a life threatening situation

B) God the Father was not a reluctant Father – sacrificing his Son – because deep down he knew he had no other Choice.

C) No – Calvary was Pre-ordained plan between the Father / Son / HS - Salvation Plan

1) Rescue mission – that all three members of the triune Godhead were in agreement w/ from day One

D) It pleased the Father to bruise the Son – because it was the Culmination of the mission

1) Save Man – Redeem the world- restore order in the midst of the Chaos

E) To set in order the restoration plan of God – plan for the ages – for all generations

1) Jesus was Crushed for our transgressions

2 Corinthians 5:19

God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself,

God the Father wasn’t detached from the Process!

This is the reason why God was pleased to bruise His Son. What it accomplished?

A) The rest of the message details this for us.

V.10b When You make His soul an offering for sin,

He shall see His seed, There is going to be offspring from this –   1st fruits of the Resurrection – First of many to encounter Resurrection life.

He shall prolong His days, He will live past his 331/2 earthly yrs and on into eternity

B) There will be a Resurrection – the crucifixion is not the end of a perfectly lived life.

C) No it was the beginning of a perfect work – continues today – Jesus working in hearts

1) Working thru hearts

And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. V.11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.

He shall be Satisfied! – What an amazing word to be attached to all of this - He shall be Satisfied

A) He Who? Jesus or the Father? – BOTH

B) Jesus was satisfied – He finished the work – He brought glory to the Father

C) Father Satisfied – The righteous requirement of God Satisfied by the Sacrifice of his son!

What Satisfied God?

A) Not your offerings – not your sacrifices

2) Not your attempts at good works

B) Not you trying to clean up your act!

Listen Sin caused a debt that needed to be paid

1) Wages of sin is death – the only thing that would satisfy the debt – was a sinless Substitute

C)) That was Jesus – He Satisfied the righteous requirement of a Holy God

D) NOTHING – REPEAT NOTHING – we can do will satisfy that debt

1) Get off of the performance treadmill

My senior year of High school I was the teacher’s aid for this really cool teacher in our School!!

A) In fact she went on to become a family friend & thru that came to Christ – she attends CCCM to this day.  NEAT Lady

B) Now what I thought was really cool is that she would let me borrow her 1980 Yellow Toyota Celica

1) I would borrow it to run errands or go to lunch

C) I remember vividly the first time that she let me Borrow her car – she asked me if I knew how to drive a stick shift –

1) Being a Big Bad Senior Varsity Baseball player – I said sure – thinking it couldn’t be that hard could it?

D) Well that day I ended up stalling her car 3 times in a row in one of the busiest intersections in Santa Ana

1) I learned that day if I was going to enjoy driving that car or any other stick shift – I was going to have to learn how to SHIFT GEARS!!!

Well the same thing could be said about the Christian life – If we are going to experience all the blessings & power & resources that are available to us IN CHRIST –

A) We are going to need to learn how to SHIFT GEARS –/ from Performance to Dependence!!!!

B) From Dependence on our performance to dependence on His Performance

Bb) Rest tonight – relax in this – God was satisfied by the performance of Jesus.

C) Notice that phrase the Pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand V.10

What is the Pleasure of the Lord?

A) Revelation Ch. 4 We are told that you and I were created for His pleasure.

B) Listen you do not exist for you! – Get that

1) You exist for God’s pleasure.

C) In Him we live and move …. Our being!

Now that almost sounds demeaning – Is God an

 Ego manic?  No!

A) The question really hangs on what is His pleasure?

B) Go back to creation. – What blesses Him?

C) What is his greatest creation – what is his greatest Joy in Creation?

D) God spends five days making the World and everything in – every fish/ animal / star / galaxy

There is almost this sigh in the heart of God as He comes to the sixth day.

A) Everything is in place – When He says – Now let us make man in our image

B) Creates man different from the rest of His creation

Creates man with this capacity to love –

1) Creates man with this capacity for relationship

C) Making him unique from the rest of His creation

God rested on the 7th day – not because He was tired!

A) Not because He needed a break

B) Not because He has a six day work week

C) He rested in His satisfaction of Creation – and He rested in His fellowship with Adam

The 7th day was the first full day of Adam’s existence and Adam and God are walking together in the coolness of the garden – enjoying fellowship

A) Adam was able to step into the presence of God and God was Satisfied by that

B) Adam walking with God in the cool of the day is what Brought God pleasure.

C) That is what brings God pleasure today!

1) Because of what Jesus did on Calvary you and I are able to step into the presence of God

D) Come boldly before His throne – Veil rent – relationship possible.

E) We come on the basis of what Jesus did and that brings God pleasure.

1) Seeing the redeemed resting in the work of the son.

He is stoked in that relationship:

A) It is not that our lives glorify God – though we should.

B) It is not that we serve God – though we should.

C) Listen I didn’t Marry Denise to serve me- though she should J -

D) Didn’t marry her to complete me – She does

1) Didn’t Marry her to assist me – She is great

I married her for fellowship: Intimacy – friendship and love –

A) That is what I rejoice in – all those other things are icing on the cake -

B) I just love her heart and fellowship

As a parent don’t you love it when you kids are just resting in your love for them.

A) Not trying to impress – not trying to over do it

B) Not trying to perform for your acceptance

1) How weird – Aaron – Laker game – chips –

Wash car – rub shoulders? – Happy dad

C) Weird? Nice! – No hang – watch game – weird

1) Aaron hates sports – Amy

Listen we can be like Aaron – Happy God – read today – drove speed limit – witnessed

A) Hey God – prayed over my whole prayer list

B) He would say: Just sit – walk with me – let’s just talk – share heart {I am

C) That is what brings God pleasure –

1) The Cross opened the way for that relationship to be restored – Awesome thing!

D) I am pleased w/ you because of Jesus.

God was also pleased to bruise Him because

V.11b By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.

Justification: Just as if you never sinned!

A) Declared righteous –

B) The Sacrifice of Jesus made a way for pp to be Justified by faith

1) Simple belief in His sacrifice!

V.12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong:

A) The Messiah’s glorious work will be rewarded.

B) With the image of dividing the spoil after a victorious battle, we see that the Messiah ultimately triumphs.

C) Paul described this ultimate triumph in Philippians 2:10-11: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

D) That is a glorious reward!

“In the end, the sufferings and humiliation of Jesus only bring Him more glory and majesty! “I do see that out of this dunghill of sin Christ has brought this diamond of his glory by our salvation. If there had been no sinners, there could not have been a Savior. If no sin, no pouring out of the soul unto death; and if no pouring out of the soul unto death, no dividing a portion with the great. If there had been no guilt, there had been no act of expiation. In the wondrous act of expiation by our great Substitute, the Godhead is more gloriously revealed than in all the creations and providences of the divine power and wisdom.” (Spurgeon)

Who does the Messiah divide the spoil with? With the strong; those strong in Him.

A) We can share in the spoil of Jesus’ victory!

If children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (Romans 8:17)

B) He shall be rewarded -

V.12 Because He poured out His soul unto death,

And He was numbered with the transgressors,

And He bore the sin of many,

And made intercession for the transgressors.

He was numbered with the transgressors:

A) Jesus could never become a sinner; He could never be a transgressor Himself.

B) Yet willingly, loving, He was numbered with the transgressors.

1) Is there a roll-call taken for transgressors? Jesus says, “Put My name down with them.”

C) We would be shocked if a godly woman looked at a list of prostitutes and said, “Put my name down among them.”

D) Or what if a godly man looked at a list of murderers and said, “Number me among them

1) But that is what Jesus did for us, only to an even greater degree.

He bore the sin of many: Over and over again, the prophet emphasizes the point.

A) The Servant of the Lord, the Messiah, suffers on behalf of and in the place of guilty sinners.

B) And made intercession for the transgressors:

1) Started on the Cross – Father forgive …….

C) Continues presently - Lives to make intercession for you and me – High priest –

Close tonight: rejoice – Great high priest – opened the door of fellowship relationship – come before God

Interceding for You

Get off the Performance treadmill – shift gears tonight

ALL JESUS

REJOICE – JUSTIFIED

ACCEPTED – SET FREE – MADE NEW

GOD TAKES PLEASURE YOU RESTING IN HIM
